BF after nipple shield

I could use some help. DS was born tongue tied so we used a nipple shield from day one. He got his tongue clipped at 2 weeks but he wouldn't nurse without the shield till this week (11 weeks). He has a shallow latch and we just can't afford to see a LC for help right now.

Does anyone have any tips on fixing his latch? My nipples are killing me. Its tempting to go back to the shield because of the pain. TIA!

Re: BF after nipple shield

  • I used the shield for 3 weeks. There were definitely times I was in a ton of pain afterthat and I tried to use it again but no luck.

You are in the safe zone to intro a bottle and pump. I felt like pumping gave me a huge break and I started building a stash.

I would find an LLL meeting near you- they will help you for free.

  • If you were doing better with the shield, go back to it. Unless you know for sure it's causing a specific issue, there's no harm in using the shield.

Unless DS seems ready to wean from it I'll use the shield forever. My philosophy is "don't fix what ain't broke."
