First Words

If you say "dada" to LO and they say it back, is that considered first word? Or is it not considered first word if you say "mama" and they return with "dada" also?

Re: First Words

  • The first word is actually the first word with meaning. Babies this young are just babbling. Sorry :)

  • It would be a word if DH walks in, she looks at him/gestures toward him and says "dada!"

Sadly, this.  MH and I battle it out to see if we can get him to say one or the other without it being just babble.  I like to point out his babble have more "m"s than "d"s

  • My interpretation of a first word is a word intentionally said by a child to describe something (like Ball) or express a need (saying Mama or Dada to get your attention or call you) and not a word that is repeated. Repeating words is considered imitation and Jargon especially if it's the two syllable word Mama or Dada which are usually the first sounds a baby makes while babbling or using jargon.. But that's just my own interpretation and I know a lot of people would disagree.

  • Thanks for the clarification ladies. I just wanted to make sure!

  • First words count when they know the meaning and can use it in context. Example, your kid says banana when looking at a banana, etc. At this point, it is just babbling. You have several months to go before counting first words.

  • LO said "Da da da DEE!" on Christmas day-- we're going ahead and putting it in the book :) I'll write whatever the next "first" word is later.

  • I've already recorded Emma's first word as "momma". When someone else is holding her and she's upset, she looks right at me with this pathetically sad face and says "momma". She also says "dadda" right to DH. There's no doubt to me that she knows what she's saying. Now, when it sounded like she said "OK" and "hi there", I figured I'd save writing those down for another time Wink
