Finally starting rice cereal and I have a few questions

DS had his 6 month appt today.  The pedi instructed us to start rice cereal and to feed it to him in the evenings.  She said to give him 1/2 of his bottle at his normal feeding time, then stop to feed him the cereal, and then to let him have what he wants of the rest of the bottle.

Have any of you tried his?  Every time I take a bottle out of DS's mouth before he's finished, he gets super pissed.  I feel like he'd be too upset to focus on a spoon going in his mouth.

Should I maybe feed him the cereal about 30 minutes before his normal feeding time, as he won't be too hungry then.

TIA

  • Hmm, this is kind of the opposite of what I've heard.  I have been nursing dd like usual, then offering solids 30-60 minutes later.  BM/formula is still supposed to be their main source of nutrition, so it doesn't make sense to me to only give lo half of his bottle.  Also, I thought new foods were supposed to be introduced in the morning in case of a reaction, then you have the whole day for it to show.

  • J is the same - god help you if you take his bottle away. I was also told to give him solids after his bottle but i didn't listen lol. I give him solids and then his full bottle and he always finishes every last drop.

All of this except the morning bit. I hadn't heard that and the pedi didn't mention it. We do it at dinner as well.

  • My pedi always instructed to do a full feeding (breast or formula) and then offer solids 45 minutes - an hour after.
