BLWers Would You Make This?

https://allrecipes.com/recipe/parsnip-pancakes/detail.aspx

I bought parsnips for her to try, but I have never had them either!  I thought this sounded yummy (lol I have no idea what they taste like!) I will not use the salt, but this should be ok right?

  • I'm making some pumpkin pancakes this week that are similar. All my BLW lit says even just straight up scrambled eggs are fine, so I'm sure baking with them is fine.

I'm using white whole wheat flour for everything, not quite ready to give her much processed white flour/sugar yet.

But yeah, I don't see any reason you couldn't make those for LO! Let me know how they are!

My doctor said fully cooked eggs are ok.  BUT I don't like my doctor so take it or leave it.

  • My pedi said yolks at 8 months and whole eggs at 10. She also said parsnips at 8 months. I wonder what it is about different foods that different pedis say to wait for...

Not so sure why someone would specify against parsnips, my understanding are that they are closely related to carrots?  Everyone is feeding carrots!

Yea, that's what I was thinking too.

I'm starting to think that most foods are probably okay at just about any time. If LO has issues with something, try again later. That recipe sounds pretty yummy though!

Yea, our doctor acted clueless when I asked him about BLW.  I explained it to him and after he tried lecturing me about not using traditional methods he told me I could feed her anything but strawberries, cows milk, anything nut, honey, and one other thing... I cannot remember, but it wasn't parsnips!  I guess I will just make that and give it a go.  Our daughter eats just about anything.  Last night we had mushroom raviolli things and she chowed the filling down like crazy!  Makes me think I should start making lots of raviollis stuffed with random foods.

We ate scrambled eggs for breakfast and she didn't really touch them.  :(  We always cook with whole wheat flour too, I don't think I even have white flour?  It should turn out fine right?

  • So I have tried avocado, sweet potato and today I tried squash. I cut the sweet potato and squash into sticks for her to grab onto. The sweet potato was cooked too much and she bit off a chunk that was way too big for her to handle. But pretty much she hates everything. :( In a few days I will try something like an apple that she can just gnaw on.

Any suggestions for how to cut the veggies or cook them? I need to get the baby led weaning book ASAP I think.

    For sure get the book.

Food should be cut into "finger" or french fry shapes. At this age, they pick it up in their fist, but don't yet open their fist to drop it in their mouth or use a pincer grip to pick up little things. So, you want it longer than their fist and easy to grab.

As far as cooking, I would go with lightly steamed, baked, or raw. I admit that we gave LO fried eggplant- it was the fastest way to cook it! Also, it's really ok if they hate everything now :) Now's just a time for playing and exploring. Keep offering a wide variety and it'll come.

OP- I would leave out the salt. Like it says in the BLW book, babies' kidneys are not mature enough to handle more than 400 mg of sodium a day. Keep in mind that milk has some sodium and veggies have some sodium too. With that in mind, it is safest not to add any salt to food a baby will eat. Too much can cause serious problems.

    Otherwise, those sound yummy!
