NBR - tax return re: maternity leave

any mama's out there that may know this?

So i live in California, I was out on Maternity Leave for 5 months, received disability checks for 4 1/2 of those 5 months.  Are the payments I received during that time taxable? Will I owe at the end of the year or how does that all work?

Thanks!

  • Depends on who paid for the disability? Was it your employer? Then yes. Was it a private policy? Then no.

This.  My disability is through my employer and I had to sign a form when I completed my disability paperwork stating whether or not I wanted taxes withheld from my checks.

  • I received my short term DI payment through my employer. I'll be taxed on that just the same as if I received unemployment. So I'm sure our taxes will be f'ed up this year.

You don't know if that will force you to owe something though. It depends on your deductions and if you itemize, etc.
