January 2012 Moms

Getting scared (vent)

I had my first internal yesterday.  But let me rewind...

My MW is on vacay until after the new year, so I had to see another one of the MW's.  Fine.

I'm going to have a big baby.  My MW and I have been discussing it since day 1.  My DH was over 8, I was over 10 lbs.  All of my family on my mom's side, all my aunts had large babies, my grandma had 11 babies, all over 8.5 lbs.  My MW has 35 yrs of experience, and she's always super positive about me having natural vaginal birth.  She's reassuring, and always puts me at ease.  Last appointment was the first time I was measuring ahead  (3 weeks ahead), and she said he's probably between 5-6 lbs, but he's fine and thriving.

Fast forward to this appointment.  This MW takes my fundal height 4 times before she announces that she can't believe how huge I am.  Then she externally examines position and exclaims that "oh, my he's HUGE! This baby is way to big".

I was like, tell me what's going on.  She said my baby is too big.  She is sending me for an u/s asap, starts in on me about restricting my diet, telling me she's not sure if I'll be able to deliver naturally, but won't tell me how big is big.  All she would say is he's the size of a full term baby.

What does that mean?  Is he 6.5 lbs? 8 lbs.? She seriously freaked me out, and I feel really scared now, and part of me feels that I shouldn't consider what she said.  But last night I kept having stres dreams and nightmares about emergency c-sections, and shoulders getting stuck ,and all sorts of odd scenarios that kept me from getting a good night's sleep.

Rationally I know that my body will not make a baby I can't birth.  I also know that lots of larger babies are born vaginally.  I know that a birth plan is not set in stone- but I haven't let myself consider any other options because I'm terrified of them.  Now My mind is racing, and my emotions have gotten the best of me.  I just want to know if this MW was being overly cautious, or is my baby too big?

Oh, and I can't get in for u/s til next wednesday. Great.

  • You already knew that your LO was going to be big. U/S measurements can be way off, 2pounds or more sometimes. At 35 weeks, he may be measuring FT, in head measurements and leg length but still be a skinny mini.

I know its hard, with the ladies reaction and hormones causing you worry.. But relax. Breathe. Whatever happens happens, nothing can change that at this point.

From what she said about restricting diet, it sounds like she thinks your GD and having a big sugar baby, or is acting like it anyway... If it makes you feel better, cut back on carbs and sugars.

I agree...if you want to slow down babys weight gain ask your MW about carbs. I know you're probably not GD but my glucose test was exactly at the cutoff point so my doctor told me to just do the diet (I had to do it with my DS so I knew the drill). Talk to your regular MW at your next visit about options.

  • Thanks ladies.  I plan on really being strict with myself until the birth in repect with my diet.  I'm not GD, nor even close.  I tested twice one test not fasting, one fasting, and both times I got a 109. I tested twice due to family history, and we just wanted to rule it out completly.  Any way, thanks again!
