Problem with food thawing

I made a batch of butternut squash puree last week for the first time. I fed some to LO for dinner that evening and froze the rest in my trays. On Tuesday I pulled a few cubes out and put in a container in the fridge to thaw for Wednesday night. When I went to give it to her it had literally melted down to liquid. I had to throw it out because it was literally like trying to spoon feed water. Has anyone else had this problem? Did I do something wrong?

Re: Problem with food thawing

  • Did you put water or formula in before freezing?  I always freeze just the food that I have pureed and then add formula before feeding.  But I haven't made squash yet...

  • I have the same issue with butternut squash. It naturally has a high water content. My first batch I boiled and it was really loose. The next time I tried I baked it in a dish in the over with a small amount of water for about an hour. It turned out more soild and easyer to feed LO. Be carefull when you're bending it too. I didn't have to add any water. I also find after its frozen with water separated from the soild part, so I try to drain off some water. I've been mixing the first batch with over veg or cereal to make it easyer to feed.

  • I did add some water when blending. Makes total sense. I will just mix this batch with sweet potatoes when serving so that it doesn't all go to waste. Thanks!

  • I get the same thing, but I just add dry rice or oatmeal & mix it in. It makes the food thicker & go a little farther :)
  • I make oatmeal or brown rice and freeze cubes of it to thicken purees.  It works really well and adds some texture to her food.  She gobbles it down.
  • Try steaming the squash, then pureeing without any added liquid. It will be thicker, but it won't thaw as watery, and you can thin if needed. If we had things that were too thin, I would just put oatmeal or mixed grain cereal in it to thicken it up.
