WTF was she thinking?

Another Xmas post - I can't believe I forgot to post sooner. 

Backstory - when  I was in sixth grade, my mom gave me my first training "bra" for Christmas - it was caught on video Christmas morning, and was all very mortifying for myself as an 11 year old, and even if I watch the video now, I am embarrassed for my 11 year old self. Its a running family joke these day though.

Flash forward to this year. My sister tells me that my mom bought 3 pairs of matching underwear/bra sets for my 11 year old niece and wrapped them for Xmas, and then didn't give her any other gifts. AND - she spent over $80 on them because she bought them at Justice (a tweeny fashion store). Note - my niece has no boobs yet - according to my sis, all she has is a barely noticeable bee sting on one side - lol

To make this all worse. The bras are PADDED (removable pads). For an 11 year old.  

So my sister isn't watching my niece as she opens the present, but sees her quickly open and then shut the box. She asks my niece what she got and my niece quickly replies "Ill show you later when Uncle J isn't here" (my brother).  

THEN, as my niece is getting dressed for the day, she pulls out one of the new panties to wear, and my mom says "Niece, what about the bra?" and my sis says "Ma, she doesn't need to wear the the bra" and then my mom says "well then she can't wear the panties, she won't match" and my sister looks at my mom incredulously and says "she's 11, she's not having sex. she doesn't need to match!"

Anyways, I am glad I wasn't around for that. I have several thoughts.

1. We ALL remember how embarrassing it was for me to get the bra at nieces age, why on earth would my mom do that again?!

2. Why are any children's stores selling padded bras for 11 year olds?

3. I never match my bra and panties - and neither does my sis - LOL who cares.

why do mom s think they are funny with that stuff? my mom used to buy me padded bras all through highschool and say stuff like "well i know you could use some help filling it out!" i was in love with a bikini she had and she gave it to our neighbor (who was the same age as me),  infront of me, and said "well, S will never be able to fill it out, it should get some use!"

aaaaaaaaaand people wonder why i had body image issues and was anorexic...

good for your sister for sticking up for her !you guys should buy your mom some depends and gma panties with stomach support and video her opening it.

yeah, i don't get it either.  i would have been mortified to receive such a gift, and your mom should have learned her lesson after making you feel bad.  giving gifts to upset people rather than make them happy is really cruel. 

i also agree that it's ludicrous to sell padded bras for 11 year olds.

What the heck!? To me that's not a Christmas gift, that's a necessity (minus the dang padding!).....WHEN THE TIME COMES! I'm glad your sister spoke her mind to your mom!

How mean! Our 11 y/o niece was wearing a bra on Christmas and you could totally tell. Dh asked her if she was anyway. He is overprotective of her. Lol. I told him to shut it.

Well, in defense of the store I was in a B cup by the age of 12... but padded is just ridicules! I would have been upset if I were your sister, to me buying a girl her first bar and such should be something that her mom should do, when she feels ready.

oh yea, and one of the panties was like a string bikini! with ties at the side. w.t.f. why do those exist?

I used to manage a Justice back in 2008, and we sold training bra/panty sets, but PADDING?! Not when I worked there! That's ridiculous! o.O Oy. Like PP's, I'm glad your sis and niece stood up to it. Poor kid! I'd have been pretty upset! Sheesh!

How trashy! 11yo girls do not need that stuff! This sounds skimpier than the lingerie that I have......and that's just for special occasions.

And I totally agree with buying your mom huge granny panties. Maybe that will get the message across.
