Cloth Diapering

Newborn prefold and cover suggestions

I'm starting to understand cloth diapering a little better. :)

I am going to start with newborn prefolds and covers.  There are many brands out there.  I checked the FAQ, and didn't see anything that was brand specific about newborn prefolds, snappis and covers.

Those that did this,  what are your preferences?

I was also planning on using flushable liners from the beginning.  Would you advise doing that as well?

Re: Newborn prefold and cover suggestions

  • I am going with imagine because they are cheap!  I also wouldn't really bother with liners until your bub starts solids, because baby poo is pretty innocuous (formula might be worse?)  You can usually just toss them I to the wash without any rinsing or whatever.

As far as a specific recommendation on brands, it is like anything, some people like different ones for different reasons.  I thought about GMDs but they were quite a bit more and I won't use then for a whole long time.  Good luck!

  • I just looked up the imagine prefolds, and I love the price!

I was thinking maybe Thirsties Duo size one covers for newborns?

    LOVE THEM!

We don't use the Snappis - don't need to - we just lay the prefold in the cover. You probably won't need liners, unless you plan to formula feed. BF poop is water soluble, so you just toss the soiled diapers into the wetbag/pail and then empty it into the washing machine. The only times we use liners is when DS has a bad rash (which has only happened once) and we used Desitin because the natural stuff wouldn't cut it.

  • FTM here but I've heard that prowrap newborn diapers are some of the best because they have a cut out for the umbilical cord so it doesn't rub. also a bit smaller than the thirsties?

Someone did mention to me that if you have a boy and plan on circumcising they had to use disposables for the first three weeks so maybe they'd be big enough for thirsties by then anyway...

  • I'm a FTM, so take my advice as such. I've been going back and forth on GMD and Bummis for a while now, but I think I will definitely end up going with GMD. All of the people I've talked to and all of the reviews I've read have been very great for both brands; however, some people have complained about the Bummis shrinking up too much. Those who have used both have recommended the GMD. I don't feel they are too expensive, really. $24/dozen for newborn and then it goes up from there. That's really not too bad when you think of all the uses those can get, even after baby has outgrown them as prefolds.

As for the covers, this is something I'm still figuring out. I'd really rather do the newborn stage pretty inexpensively, so I think I will be going with some Kawaii covers, but I'm still undecided.

  • I've used prowraps. We got 5 total, two newborn (the ones with the scoop cut out for the cord), and three infant. My 6lb baby fit the newborn up until this week, she's a little over two months.  They've held up great, held everything in, and at $8-$9 a pop, the price was right.Let me say though, that they are plain white. I have actually found that I perfer that to the cute little patterns you can get, but that's just my choice. I got a bummis super wisper second hand, and a brite as a gift.  I don't like that they don't have the double leg gussets, and the brite gives DD those red marks, so I personally woudn't recommend them over the prowraps.

For prefolds, I have some GMD seconds, but I got most of my stash from Nurtured Family.  I found that theirs are much softer, and quilted nicely.  I also felt like the size was better for DD when she was smaller. I got the yellow edge GMD's, and they weren't added to the rotation until she was over a month. The NF prefolds look like they will fit nicely into my BG 4.0 one sizes too, so she will get use out of them for much longer than just these few months. HTH!

  • I've been CDing with prefolds and covers since my son came home from the hospital and love it. Here's what I bought:

24 GMD (Green Mountain Diapers) orange edge newborn prefolds (fit my son from birth 8lbs 10oz to 12 pounds at 6.5 weeks)

24 GMD yellow edge small prefolds (fit my son from 12 pounds to 15 now at 15 weeks, and probably will fit up to 17 or 18 pounds)

3 Bummis superbrite newborn covers (fit best up to 11 pounds or so)

7 Thirsties Duo Wrap size 1 (fit best from 10 pounds to 18)

    3 snappis

I use the angel wing fold with a snappi. It's my understanding that if you want to use a snappi rather than just lay the diaper trifolded in a cover, GMD prefolds are cut to do this well without extra folding. Using a snappi really helps keep loose EBF poo contained.

I also bought diaper liners just to have everything I might want to try at the ready in the beginning, to give myself the best chance of success. I haven't used any of them yet, and will probably try it out when we start solids. Using liners in the beginning would be more of a mess and hassle IMO.

I also have 6 pocket diapers, BG 4.0s, but find we rarely use them because the prefolds are so easy. Also, the BGs did not fit my tiny waisted little guy well until about 13 or 14 pounds. But, I do like them now when I use them and I think they'll make good overnight diapers. We've been using them that way for the last 3 nights. We've only had one leak overnight with a prefold so far, but he does wake up with them soaked now and the BGs with microfiber keep him feeling dryer longer.

You will want a minimum of 24 diapers to start, and at least 6 covers, especially in the beginning. The newborn size really fits newborns best, and I can't imagine skipping that size and dealing with super bulky odd fitting diapers for the first 6 weeks, especially when everything else is so hard those first weeks.

Sorry that turned out to be so long! I hope it helps. Good luck!

  • We use generic Indian unbleached prefolds from Amazon (there was no name brand listed). They are fantastic!  We also use Thirsties covers and love them as well.  Going on seven weeks and no leaks yet!

ETA:  I use the angel wing fold and a snappi, but DH just trifolds and lays them in the cover (no snappi).  Both work great.  Also as others said you don't need liners at this stage unless you are using CD-unsafe diaper cream, because newborn poop will just wash out on its own.

  • We used homemade PFs for the NB stage (left behind by a renter) along with GMD orange edge.

For covers we had Proraps, Thirsties Duos, and Bummis (whichever one has leg gussets). All worked just fine. The Thirsties were our favorite. However, the Proraps are cheaper and definitely worked (they just seemed stiffer).

Now our favorite covers are Blueberry coveralls.

We had about 10 covers for the NB stage. I liked having tons because then I didn't have to always snappi or be so careful with snappi'ing/folding and worry about poop getting on the cover. We had plenty for when poop did get on the cover and I did laundry every other day.

Liners to me are weird. What's the point? Especially for a NB whose poop you don't need to rinse/scrape? They are just an extra step.

  • Snappis are the brand name- just one kind. We used NB bummis super brite covers and thirsties xs covers in the beginning. We originally bought thirsties duo wraps size 1, but they were way too big and fit weird/ leaked until she around 6 weeks. NB PFs are all basically created equal, the slight differences in brand matter more for older babies.

  • I started with bummis prefolds, but didn't really like them. I got GMD prefolds and fell in love with them. I also really like my GMD workhorses. I used bummis and thirsties covers. You won't need the liners with newborn poop. It just goes in the washer with the diaper. You may want to use them when LO's poop becomes more like peanut butter once they've started solids. I found that it was easier not to use them because my LO had random poop times and it wasn't hard to scrape it off with toilet paper.
