Pill Swallowing Cup

Does anybody have one they recommend? DD can't seem to swallow her ADHD meds without cracking them open and I sure would like for her to learn to take them whole.

Re: Pill Swallowing Cup

  • Very curious to see the responses... we can thankfully open DS's capsule and pour it into his mouth or a drink, but it'd be so much easier if he could swallow them!

  • We have tried that Auntie...she just can't do it. LOL I mean, it's not the end of the world that we have to open it, but in my mind I think the meds would work better if they went down whole, broke open and released when they were supposed too. Instead of not having to dissolve the casing. BTW, I'm talking about Adderall or Vyvanse...did it with Focalin but will NEVER take that med again. Ugh.

Pill swallowing cups don't work as well for capsules. They're designed for pills which are heavier than water unlike capsules that float. The trick for capsules is to take a swig of water first to lubricate the throat, then the capsule with water tilting your head forward to allow the capsule to float to the back of the throat where it should slip down easily.

Not sure what med you use, but Concerta should not be opened.

Vyvanse- the Dr said it was fine to open and mix into drinks.

How do you like Vyvanse? DD has not had a great time with it, but that's nothing new.

It's... working. I don't know that it's the best possible med for him, but the dr seems reluctant to change it b/c he's starting to gain weight again, doing ok in school, so he figures if it's not broke... He doesn't have the massive mood swings he had when he was on Adderoll or Focalin, so that's a major plus for us. The not wanting to eat thing kills me though... he always had a good appetite, and was slender even before meds... I feel sometimes like people think we're starving him he's so thin these days.
