A while ago, DH had an old polo shirt that he was about to throw out. I asked if I could have it, and he said, "Sure!"
I cut it up to make cloth wipes, and they are hands down the best cloth wipes that I have -- and I have all different kinds (flannel, flannel/terry, baby washcloths, even bamboo velour). The outside of the polo shirt is a little textured, so that works great for the initial swipe on a messy bottom, and then the inside is nice and soft for the final cleaning.
Also, since it's a knit material, you don't even have to sew the edges. I literally just cut them and started using them, and they've held up fine -- it's probably been at least a year now. Some of them have a few stringies on the edges, but nothing major.
Just thought I'd pass along that tip. If you/your DH don't have any polo shirts to spare, I saw some at my local thrift store for 99 cents the other day. Get the biggest size you can and I bet you could get a full stash of wipes out of one shirt.
