Babies: 6 - 9 Months

DS keeps making a funny face? Is he ok??

I know this probably sounds COMPLETELY stupid but DS started making this face the other day over and over. We thought he was just trying to get attention and we laughed because it truly was a funny face.

However, now...he keeps doing it over and over again.
He's doing it about 5 times a day, maybe more.
And when he starts doing it, he does it probably 10+ times in a row, all within a minute of each other.
(He doesn't cry, laugh or anything...he just keeps doing it.)

It's hard to explain what the face actually looks like...but he opens his mouth really wide, scrunches his eyes together & sometimes throws his head back. (almost like he's laughing really hard or yawning or something)

I'm wondering if it could be related to teething?
He just cut his first tooth a few days ago.
I wasn't thinking about it too much but my mother has me worried now.
WWYD? Does it sound normal?

Re: DS keeps making a funny face? Is he ok??

  • Does he do it when hes exited? I've seen babies that do this, and sometimes shake, when there exited. maybe hes just found a cool new look. lol. I wouldn't be worried :)
  • No, he's not excited. It's always really random.
I know what face you are talking about, he does that but this is very different...I can't tell if it's a painful look or what it is.

  • Catch it on video and show it to the pedi.  If it's nothing, you wasted nothing but time.  That's what my pedi always tell me.......

  • This is one of those things that you just don't know. Certainly no one here can tell you if he's okay or not okay based on what you told us, lol. Babies make weird faces and funny noises all the time. DD does a thing where she scrunches up her whole face and shakes her head back and forth...for no reason. I think it's just part of discovering the world and their bodies.

It might be his teeth or his ears, but if he's not showing any other signs of distress, I wouldn't worry about it.

Of course. I understand that no one can tell me if he's ok. I think I'm wondering more than anything if anyone has ever experienced this with their LO.

But thank you. I will definately video record it and show it to his pedi next week sometime, only because we are having a lot of issues right now. He's been refusing his bottle & solids, he's been extra fussy and he's sleeping horribly.
It is probably just teething but I just want to be sure.
  • gas. DD makes a goofy pooping face.
  • A friend of mine had a similar issue with her son a few years ago.  They actually took him in to be checked out to rule out seizures.  In the end, he was just making weird faces.

I would probably mention it to the pedi to ease my mind.  Even if they think it's silly at least you'll feel better.
