For working moms: BFing LO at lunchtime?

I will be going back to work in January and my DS's daycare is 2 miles away from work.  I could go bf him at lunch time.  The day-care is ok with this.  Has anyone done this?  Do you recommend it?  DS is not a good napper, but will fall asleep while bfing so I am hoping to get him to nap this way also.  Any thoughts?

  • He will probably totally surprise you and sleep no problem :) My DS is and always was a crap napper, but he slept no problem at daycare.

I did it a few times when DS was older - and I wasn't happy with how it turned out. DS was a frequent nurser,  and he would get a lot more at once from the bottle than from me. So when I would bf him, he would be hungry about an hour later for a bottle and I hadn't pumped during lunch so it didn't make up for itself.

  • I did this pretty much every day for a year.  It was awesome.  I felt like it helped keep me connected to DS and is way better than pumping!  I didn't use it for napping, since I prefer to feed when they first wake up, not to get them to sleep, but I don't know why it wouldn't work if that's your routine.  I really loved this time with him and sweet break during the day, so I hope to do this with DD this time around too!

  • I did it with both kids.  DS would never eat because there was too much going on, but we'd play for a while.  DD would eat--I always thought she'd fall asleep but for some reason she never did.  I recommend it.  You'll get to know the teachers and the other babies and it feels like you're not away from your baby for so long.  Plus, for supply, it's always better to nurse than pump.

  • Yep, I did this and it was really nice to see him during the day.  He went to DC at 3.5 months and we continued nursing at lunch till he was maybe 6 or 7 months old.  At that time, he dropped a feeding session so the timing totally didn't work out AND he was just too busy when I can to want to nurse.  I still kept visiting though because the time was so nice with him.  In fact, today was my last day visiting.  Sob, sob, but he is totally ready to not need mommy during the day.  (Not sure mommy is ready though! LOL)  Good luck and go for it!
