Shin pain?

For the past 2 weeks or so I've had on/off shin pain.  It feels like shin splints but I've only gotten shin splints from exercising and I'm certainly not doing enough moving around to get close to calling what I'm doing exercise.  One day it will be my left shin, it will hurt all day and then be fine the next day.  Then it will be my right shin, but then be fine the next day.  A couple of days it's been both shins and a couple of days it's been neither.

It just seems so odd to me.  I can't blame it on weight gain b/c I've not gained very much weight so far. But it almost seems like it's throbbing even when I am sitting and not being active. My calves are kind of sore and feel like they could easily cramp so I'm going to start doing some stretching for them but otherwise I'm not really sure what to think of this!

Anyone else having odd shin pain?

Re: Shin pain?

  • Yes!  I've been having it all of third trimester.  It's like a throbbing pain. I found propping up my feet to be the only thing to help/prevent.

  • It is probably swelling causing the pain. Even if you don't look swollen, it may be internal. My knees have been bothering me. Icing can help, and keeping them elevated. I kind of laughed when I read the title because I smacked my shin last night on the bed during a midnight potty run and now I have a bruise.

  • I am prone to shin splints and have had them a few times throughout pregnancy - it seems like when there's a growth surge I get them.  I'm presuming it's from the shift in weight/balance.  Not that you're doing more "exercise", but rather than you're carrying around 30 lbs. extra and most of it concentrated to the front of your abdomen, shifting your posture, etc.  It changes the way you carry yourself obviously and I'm thinking (guessing!) that going up/down stairs or walking even a tiny bit more than usual is enough to cause shin splints.  That's my theory at least!
