WTF is the difference??

Someone please explain this crap to me because no, I am NOT 80, 26 actually and I call nice work "bottoms" SLACKS dammit.  What constitutes "slacks" vs "pants?"  Someone care to explain how this makes me a friggin old lady?

  • I say slacks too, and i'm 26....maybe its a 26 year old thing.  lol
  • lol i dont think it makes you an old lady...when i think of slacks i think of nice pants (meaning not jean material)  i think the word you use just depends on where you are from/how you were brought up....in england pants mean underwear...lol so i dont really think there is a difference...tomaytoe tomahtoe :)
  • it's the same, just called different things in different parts of the country.  my grandma calls shirts "tops".  like people in michigan call soda "pop".

celebrate your diversity and uniqueness! ;)

  • I think slacks are dressier pants, and pants are more casual? That's how my father always put it.

  • Maybe some of it is geographical? My grandma and my dad both call them slacks, and they are the only true New Englanders in the family (as in, lived there most of their lives).
  • Everything is pants unless they are jeans... sorry ;)
  • I call nice pants slacks too.
  • dunno.  i say pants.  jeans.  trousers.  khakis.  chinos.

slacks are polyester, tend to be elastic waisted, and worn by people over 70.

  • I use the word slacks for my husbands work pants and I just use the word dress pants for my work pants.

  • i say pants or dress pants and DH says slacks. trousers def sounds like an old person, or maybe british. I was once given the compliment by a Brit "smashing trousers!!"

  • i also say slacks for nice pants, although i use it interchangeably with trousers.

to me, pants is the overall group name, and jeans, khakis/chinos, slacks/trousers are the subgroupings.

i disagree with njkitty too. the polyester, elastic waisted garments she described have always been known as the generic pants term to me, while  slacks and trousers refer to nice wool suiting type pants.

  • fyi DH is New England born and bred and has confirmed that "slacks" is not a New England term!

    LOL

probably because the only person I know of that used the word "slacks" was my grandmother.

    sorry.

Ditto this Angel Maybe its a regional terminology, I don't know. I just never hear people call them slacks unless they are old ladies.
