October 2011 Moms

Weird Self soothing

My ds has been waking up about 15-20 minutes after being put down for bedtime. I go up to his room and pat his back, he then stops crying. I sit quietly in his room in the recliner until he falls back asleep  in case he needs me. He then puts himself back to sleep by scratching his sheets. He will do it for about 5 to 10 min and it's loud enough to hear over his white noise machine. DH said he heard a strange noise while ds was falling asleep in the swing and realised ds was scratching the tray on the swing. Does anyone else's lo do strange things while falling asleep?

Re: Weird Self soothing

  • For ds, no (at least not that I've observed yet), but BIL's daughter would pinch your armhair when she got sleepy. Not actually pull it out, but lightly pinch/tug at it.

  • Yes. My DD also scratches at the sheets or rubs her hands back and forth over them. She also flip flops her head from side to side a few times while settling in.

  • imagewishful thinkin:
My niece would play with our lips and my nephews would play with our elbow and our nose.

There used to be a boy at my day care who couldn't go to sleep unless he could tweak the caregiver's elbow.  All my friends thought it was weird but I just wrote it off as another baby thing.

My LO rubs her hands back and forth across her face when she's sleepy.  It's becoming a problem because her skin is already dry and she's rubbing it raw.

  • She has been rubbing her head back and forth as she falls asleep but I think it might be more so to try and keep herself awake.  It has been causing her to get a ring around her head and you can see hair on her sheets because she is causing it to break off.  If she isn't swaddled sometimes she will rub the back of her head, which she also does when she starts getting drowsy while nursing.
  • DD grabs a chunk of skin from my neck and holds on to it, nails and all.

  • Yep, I've got pretty much all of the above. She scratches the sheets, rubs her face back and forth on her bed, pulls at her paci, and pulls at her sheets. I normally pick her back up and settle her down more since when she up to all of these shinnanagins, she's bound to start in on crying soon.

  • My mom always said the scratching the sheets, or whatever I was sleeping in/laying on, was how I would put myself to sleep. But DS hasn't done anything like that yet lol. He growls himself to sleep.

  • My DD rubs her nose on my chest and does the scratchy grabby thing on my shirt, my chest, my neck. It seems to soothe her. We also have a blankie she likes to cuddle and rub as she's drifting off.
