What counts as a "session"

Is there a certain amount of time we should be aiming for?  Does there need to be a certain amount of time in between?  I ask because we are still pumping after she nurses because she's an inefficient eater but is improving.  She doesn't drain a breast though so I need to keep pumping for the time being to keep my supply up.  I know she should be nursing 10-12 times a day but does it count as one or two sessions if she eats for 20 minutes, stops for a half hour or so, then wants to nurse again?

Re: What counts as a "session"

  • I was told if LO eats well for 10min that it 'counts'. As for the time between feedings, I have no rule of thumb.

  • Sounds like she's doing a lot of cluster feeding. I didn't really worry about counting sessions in the beginning, I just nursed whenever DS wanted. After about 6 weeks, his "sessions" became more definitive and that"s when I started counting. As long as she has enough wet diapers, I wouldn't worry so much about the logistics.
