Here's a quick update to my DH vent from yesterday for anyone following...
The wood used in the rest of our house has been discontinued by the manufacturer. So unless we want to put a different wood down in our bedroom from the rest of the house (the two woods would meet in the doorway), that's not an option anymore. We looked into staining the concrete in there, but the previous owners painted it white, so in order to do that, we'll have to have concrete re-poured over it. In looking today, that is not cheap!
So we're kind of back to square one. I think we're going to have to have carpet installed again - it's the best option. I really wish he would have thought about trying to get the old carpet professionally cleaned before tearing it out. It will probably be around $800-$1000 when it's all said and done which really pisses me off, but it is what it is. We bought a big rug at Ikea today and are throwing around the idea of painting the concrete a dark color to make it look more pleasing until we can afford to put the carpet back down.
I'm still super pissed. We were supposed to take a trip for our 5th anniversary in March, but that's totally out of the question now. Happy anniversary to me I know it will end up fine, but I hope he's learned to not be so damn impulsive!!
Re: Update to my vent...
I'm sorry about your sucky situation. If it were me, I would want to slap him upside the head.
<<hugs>>
I'm not sure what your vent was from yesterday (scrolled through and couldn't find it), but when we added on to our living room (added about 250 sq. ft.), we had to try and match the hardwoods that were in there already. We bought the wood flooring, with no stain or anything on them and then sanded the crap out of the floor that was existing. Then we stained it all the same, going a little bit heavier on the new stuff and you cannot tell one bit where the old stuff ends and the new stuff begins. Turned out great.
And to kinda feel your pain, the previous owners didn't try at all to match the master bedroom (which they added to the house) flooring to the rest of the house--they even put the wood down in a totally different direction! Idiots! But with the transition from our room to the hallway, it's not really that noticeable a difference.
How expensive are carpet squares? I'm sure it's not as pretty as regular carpet, but if it's cheaper (and should be easy to install yourself) maybe it would be worth it for the short-term? And it might be more durable for your dogs, as well as easy to replace.
DHs can be clueless. We had a leak in our guest bathtub about two months ago. I noticed it was leaking through the wall and starting to spread to the living room (the laminate was starting to pucker). So I rigged up a reroute to drain it straight into the tub rather than on to the wall. Well, I had to remove it to give DD a bath and ask him to put it back... yeah, he rerouted it on the FLOOR. So the whole bathroom floor was soaked and it has ruined about a 6 ft x3 ft area of our laminate on the other side of the wall. UGH! CLUELESS!

that sucks
my sister just had new carpet installed in their new house in one room (guest room/office) and she went to a carpet remnant place and it was only $400 installed. i was surprised at the price- it is a similar size to our bedroom that cost nearly $1k to re-carpet last year. i can ask her where the carpet place is if you're interested (though i'm sure it is probably central-ish)
I couldn't find your original vent, either, but how big is the doorway where the two woods would meet? Would it look horrible to use two different woods and just put a decorative transition between the two? Maybe some kind of pattern incorporating both styles so that it looks intentional? I think as long as you intentionally picked a different wood color instead of picking one that is slightly off so that it looks like you did it wrong, it probably wouldn't look so horrible.
Either way, I'm sorry. This doesn't sound fun.
I would love that Mollie! We're in RR, but I'd pay extra for a travel fee if I needed to.
MMT & Joyco - I DD'd the other post. I wasn't very nice to DH and I didn't want him to stumble upon it accidentally (or not-so-accidentally). The jist of it is, he ripped up our bedroom carpet and we had no plan on how to replace or fund the unplanned renovation. Since this is a house we don't plan on being in for too much longer, I don't really want to put a lot of money into putting down wood, especially when it doesn't match the rest of the house. All the other bedrooms are carpeted, so I think putting nice carpet down would look fine.
Holyeff, I would have been pissed. Sorry.
Thanks
I've calmed down a lot since the initial rant...hence the DD
