Constipated even though a little bit of poop?

My LO is 7 months old and we have been doing solids for a few months, but recently she has been eating much more of the solids at meals.  The last few days, she is really straining to poop and when she does, it is just a little bit and isn't hard.  She cries every time she's done pooping and has a horrendous diaper rash.  Is this constipation?  Anything we can do to help?

We just started fruits last weekend and gave her some prunes last night hoping that would help.

 TIA!

  • We've been going through the same thing. DD strained hard, and then burst out into tears. We found fairly dry stools in her diaper and she had a rash that made diaper changes painful. It lasted a few days.

What helped was feeding her prune puree and increasing her fluid intake (BM and water). She is back to normal now.

FWIW, in an infant, constipation isn't determined by frequency of bowel movement or the amount of straining. It's determined by the consistency/texture of the poop.

Actually this isn't true. Infants can have bowel movements that may seem as though they are diarrhea when in fact it's actually constipation, and the only reason the consistency and texture are soft or watery is because their intestines are packed with the hardened bowels. So in this case they'll be straining to push out what's hard or dry but only the most recent stool (soft stools) will seep out past what's blocking them up.

Op if the prunes don't work, you may want to try peaches, pears, or apple juice.
