Allergies emerging during pregnancy?

So I've had what I thought was pregnancy rhinitis for about 4 months now.. sneezing, mucous, but no temperature or anything. I read somewhere that pregnancy rhinitis is a very common symptom and for some women it lasts their entire pregnancy. But today, when I mentioned this to my doc for the first time, she said it was more likely that I had developed allergies to something. I've never been allergic to anything, and there are absolutely no allergies in my family! Doc said to "try to eliminate allergens" which I thought was odd since I don't know what I'm allergic to, if anything.

Whaddya think, should I see an allergist or just wait it out?

  • I know that my allergies have gotten worse since getting pregnant. I'm currently in the mountains at a ski resort, it's snowing, temperatures are below freezing, and I'm still sneezing like crazy (what could possibly be blooming that I'd be reacting to in this weather?). My doctor told me it is safe to take Zyrtec, and that has helped some. It also helps to use a nasal rinse system, which will clear some of the allergens out of your nose.

     Hope you feel better soon!

  • I had pregnancy rhinitis for the first 18 weeks and then it disappeared!!! Maybe it will disappear for you too *crossing fingers*...it's so annoying huh?? Doctor said I could take Claritan if I wanted - but like you know, it's different from regular allergies. More mucus-y. Non-medicated saline spray saved me!! If you aren't already taking it...

  • I haven't gotten any new allergies, but it has definitely magnified mine. I don't know that I would make a special appt with an allergist if you don't already have one, as I would be willing to bet they will just tell you to take a Zyrtec (or any other approved medicine) every morning. This is what my allergists told me. It's not a miracle worker but it definitely helps, and he feels confident my allergies will go back to normal after I deliver.

  • Thanks everyone! Guess I'll wait it out, with the help of trusty Claritin/Zyrtec, and see if I'm still like this after giving birth.. Really hope it isn't allergies.

  • My mom developed a horrible allergy to cats when she was pregnant with me, and it has not gone away.  Weird, right?  But I've been constantly stuffed up every night when I go to bed during this pregnancy.  I'd probably wait it out until this pregnancy is over.  That is unless you are completely miserable all the time.

  • I have terrible allergies anyway, but now my face looks like a mylar balloon!  I literally had to put an ice pack on my face to get the sinus swelling down. My OB told me to go ahead and take AllegraD.   I was like "Are you serious?! Everything I have ever read and everyone I have ever talked to said that was the worst thing to take while pregnant"   He said it is the same active ingredients as taking regular Allegra plus a Sudafed.  The "Sudafed" ingredient reduces the swelling.  I have taken that for about 5 days now and my LO and I are doing great.  I would ask your Dr first though.
