Lets Talk Nurseries!

Has anyone started dreaming about your little one's nursery yet?

I definitely have. We've got one room in our house that has been completely untouches since we bought over a year ago, since we knew it would become the nursery. Reading baby bargains also told me it's time to do a bit of research, since it's recommended to order some big ticket items around 20 weeks.

Please tell me I'm not the only one!!

We're looking at spending some money on a crib (Capretti) and glider/recliner (Monte), then doing the rest mostly DIY or as cost effectively as possible.

For colour combinations, I'm thinking grey/white/coral for a girl, and still on the fence about a boy (something with green and taupe). We've decided not to go with a theme.

Anyone else put any thoughts into this? Go! :)

Re: Lets Talk Nurseries!

  • I want to do princess/fairy tale theme for a girl (not Disney-ish though) with pink/green/cream or pink/tan/cream, and we found a cute plane/train bed set for a boy in blue and green. We saw a cream antique-looking crib and furniture set for a girl, but I might want to keep the furniture more neutral since we are going to get the crib that changes to a bed.

I really want netting to go over the crib (see below) if we have a girl, but I don't know if it's safe. Does anyone know? I see it all over the internet.

  • I am going to use my DS crib that is still great! But we have already picked out our nurseries for a boy or a girl.

This is for a girl                                 This is for a boy of course

We are going very simple and fun... We don't have a lot to budget, so these are great options for us.

  • I pretty much have my nursery all figured out. We're getting Ikea furniture. I found a bumper-free crib set on amazon that I like. I'm thinking we're going to keep it pretty neutral, unless we're having girls or boys. I'll probably add some purple or blue.. I'm thinking brown and mint green for now.

We did this for DD's crib but had to take it down as soon as she stood up since she was pulling on it.

We'll be moving just a few weeks before I give birth - it will be a miracle if we can get the crib back together and find the sheets for it!

ETA: MIchaela- You can probably leave the netting up until the baby starts to roll around.  She may be able to grab it at some point and that's when it would be dangerous.

I was thinking that, but how soon can the baby roll around? We plan on keeping the baby in our room for a while first, so the baby may not be in there at all when the netting is up. Hmmm, is it worth it for cute nursery pics and my own satisfaction for only a few months of not really even using the nursery? I guess it depends on the cost.

Ada started pulling up and standing at around 9 months give or take? That's when she started really yanking on the net-thing over her crib so we took it down. We got hers at IKEA so it was only like $5.

  • In my house I have two spare rooms-one is pink and the other is blue (from the previous owners).  I like the idea of a jungle for a boy-I like Peter Rabbit too but that would be something I would have to change in a couple years.

Not sure about the girls room.  I was thinking of a pink and black Paris kind of theme.

I'm lucky I'm in printing so I can print all the wall mural stuff myself.

Then again there is something to be said about a clean and classic style like this,

So pretty much no-I have not decided hahaha

  • I have been making plans for a while now... I will probably be converting my office into the nursery, and have some ideas regarding layout and what kind of items I will be buying.

DH isn't convinced I should give up my study - probably because he's worried I'll move it elsewhere and then my mess won't be as well contained  :S. It will probably also depend on what items I get second hand vs what I buy new, but most likely there won't be a theme as such except perhaps for colours if I can do it.

  • I was just lurking on this post, because i am a little jealous of those of you who get to have nurseries!  We are in NYC and a 1 bedroom apartment.  Our nursery is going to be next to our bed :(

Loved reading through all the lovely ideas though!  Maybe by the time LO is 16 or so, we can afford a 2 bedroom :)

  • Our nursery is painted a pretty blue, we're working on the changing table/dresser, picked out a crib, and know what we're doing for decor (Star Wars, heck yes!). We just want to find out if it's a boy or girl to pick whether we'll be doing bright pink or lime green as accents.
  • well, we could do a Lego theme but that might be too predictable for even us Lego nerds.  We already have duck overload in the guest bathroom/kids bathroom.  The current plan is "The great outdoors."  Probably will be interpreted as more boyish but we'll add ladybugs to girl it up if this is a little girl in me.  DH thinks we should paint a mountain range over the lower half or 2/3rd and sky blue for the rest up to the ceiling.  I like the idea but not sure how well he can do a mountain range that I would be happy with.  I may recruit my cousin's husband.  He did an awesome job painting for his kids' rooms: one was bugs for the boy/girl twins and the other was "under the sea" for their 2nd child (a little girl).  We saw wall stickers online but not sure how well those would look on textured dry wall.  I do like that they can be easily removed though.  We're also getting an ikea crib and mattress as well as their fitted sheets.  I was thinking of choosing a few of our nice photos from various hikes and vacations to print onto canvas at costco but also plan to work on a few cross-stitch patterns I've had for years.  The odd ball decoration will be the "Noah's Sub" cross-stitch I made when i first started TTC.  Took me over a year to finish it because I didn't work on it every day and took a break from it here and there when TTC was getting emotionally challenging but after all that effort, it's getting used!

  • I have been daydreaming about my nursery since we were TTC, pinning like crazy on Pinterest and luckily gave the room a fresh coat of paint (yellowish orange) and installed new trim before we got our BFP.  Before being a nursery, it was my craft room, so it already has a daybed in it that we will be keeping and actually went ahead and bought a crib (ikea gulliver) a few weeks ago to make sure it would fit with the daybed.  It will be a enchanted forest theme girl or boy, but I will probably add more foxes if it is a boy to make it a bit more masculine.  My mom is already making a quilt for the daybed with fabrics we picked out this summer, and back at the beginning of my pregnancy when I still had some energy, I painted a tree mural.  I am hoping I will be able to do more in the next few weeks when I get my second trimester energy burst :)

  • I got it from Cocalo on babysupermall.com its way cheaper. I thought I could use it for boy or girl but it is definately more boyish so you may want to find out the sex because it is an expensive set.

  • We've decided on an airplane/aviation theme if it's 2 boys, and aquarium theme if it is one of each, and I have no idea what we'll do if it's 2 girls.

  • we really want a dr. seuss theme with character appliques popping up around the room on the walls since we can't paint and we'll use bold colors in the furniture and decor. i love this theme and can't wait to start it, but to be honest it was originally DH's idea. (i secretly have a stash of old school winnie the pooh toys that i used to have when i was little and will give to our child)

it would be for either a boy or a girl. we're using a bassinet to start and then will use a mini convertible crib. but we have plenty of room to play with.

cat in the hat bedding is my favorite but all characters will be somewhere in the room. toys will be the developmental ones with crazy bold colors (i like these anyways i could play with them myself lol)

  • We painted the future baby's room while we were TTC.  It has a white chair rail and is green above it and dark brown below it.  I'm going to try to PIP of the huge dragon cross-stitch I finished this summer (that I've been working on/off for 7 yrs!) that will go in baby's room.  2012 is the chinese yr of the dragon and DH & I love dragons anyways so it all works.  The green part of the walls match the green mat in the frame & the green parts of the dragon.

  • Meee! I have everything picked out if its a boy! I am more picky about a girl because I really don't want to do pink I am thinking maybe yellow and green! Who knows but I love looking! 20 weeks can't come soon enough!
  • We are team green and will be doing a beach theme. DH's family has a beach house that is very special to the entire family. We have always admired the photography of a local artist, and will be buying a large, framed picture for over the crib. The walls will be baby blue and we have tan carpeting with white trim. We are thinking about doing wainscot on the wall where the crib will be as well.

  • I feel like the pressure is on, lol. I worked really hard on Shane's and it came out amazing. I'm hoping I can come up with something equally as fun for this baby.

This is what we did for Shane:

    https://www.roomzaar.com/rate-my-space/Nurseries/Dr-Seuss-Nursery/detail.esi?oid=6710944

I'd like to do another book-ish theme, but I'll wait until we know whether it's a boy or girl. I think an Eric Carle room would be a lot of fun, but so would a fairy tale theme.

  • I already have a child of each gender so the new baby will just be in the room with which other child. Neither of their rooms are decorated yet though.

If it's a girl, the girls room will be painted a pale yellow with white furniture and pops of pink and orange.

If it's a boy, the boy room is going to be a pale blueish/gray color and it's Cars themed because my son loves the movie Cars.
