For those adding rice cereal due to reflux

How much do you add to the bottle? We are currently using Enfamil AR, but I want to change over to Gentlease due to his gassiness. I think he still needs a little thinkening of the formula for his reflux, but my pedi only told me to add a "smidgen" of rice cereal. Thanks, Dr. Specific.

He typically takes 7 oz per bottle. Thanks! :)

Re: For those adding rice cereal due to reflux

  • To answer your question you can add a teaspoon of cereal per ounce of formula. My LO takes 5.5 oz and I add 2 teaspoons. What you can do is start off with 2 and see if it helps, if not you can always add more. I definitely wouldn't start off with 7 teaspoons.

Also, a little advice you didn't ask for....my LO had horrible gas and gentleease helped with the gas, but made her very irritable. Gerber GoodStart has been a miracle formula. My LO is happy and has no gas.

  • lol Dr. Specific, the looseness dr.s use is boggling. Anyhow, I had used about 3/4 of a tablespoon to I believe 5 or 6 oz. Again, I never knew if that was okay, but my LO is just fine. I wish there was a more black and white answer to issues like this. Good luck!

  • My DD's specialist and Pedi recommended rice cereal for reflux as well. We were told to give 1 tsp per ounce. She takes 4 ounces so we do 2 tablespoons per the entire bottle with y cut nipples. It helps so much. Also, the rice made her extremely gassy so we switched to oatmeal which has seemed to help.
  • Thanks so much for the response! I'll start with 2 tsp. and I can always add more.

You know, I have seen several people on here post wonderful things about the Gerber formula. Maybe I'll give that one a try!

  • GL!  Thickening DS' milk only made his tummy troubles worse, so I have no advice really.  What finally worked for him was PC Sensitive (the walmart generic of similac sensitive) and Prevacid.

  • I did 2 tbsp in a 6-7oz bottle. I have since upped it to 2.5 tbsp in 7 oz.

  • Our pedi GI recommended 1/4 tsp per ounce. We are slowly cutting back from this over time.
