Flying with almost 9 mos olds....Logistic questions???

Hi Ladies,

Ok so another couple of questions for y'all...

We will be flying back to NE in May for my DH's 20th highschool reunion and the twins will be almost 9 mos old.  I vowed we would never fly until all the kids are at least 5 years old, but my in laws will be coming along also to help out.

So my questions are:

1) What should we bring for a stroller?  And can you bring the stroller through security? We have a DSNG, a BOB Duallie and a BJCS, but I am considering searching CL for a used lightweight SBS for the trip that way if it gets damaged I wont be too upset. WWYD?

2) Did you gate check your carseats? (We are buying a seat for DS#1 but will have 1 convertable & 2 infant seats we need to bring w/ us).

Thanks!

Re: Flying with almost 9 mos olds....Logistic questions???

  • we flew with the girls when they were 8.5 months old from MA to GA...we brought our city mini and a bag to protect it (and gate checked) in hindsight I would have brought our cheaper, easy to snap closed graco duaglider...

I also would have checked their car seats when we checked our luggage if we needed to bring them (ILs borrowed convertibles from friends) - no way I would have lugged the car seats all the way up to the gate...

And I would have bought an extra ticket so there were 3 between dh and I and the girls...we lucked out and had an extra seat on all but one of our flights, and the one without the extra seat for maneuverability was terribly difficult...and dh and I couldn't sit together b/c of the oxygen masks...

If they are still in a DSNG, I'd use that, and then gate check the infant carseats and DSNG. If they aren't in that anymore, I'd probably buy a cheap SBS if you're worried about your BJCS. When we flew a few months ago, we gate checked our MacLaren but I hate that thing and was secretly hoping something would happen to it so I'd have an excuse to buy another. No such luck.

    2) Did you gate check your carseats? (We are buying a seat for DS#1 but will have 1 convertable & 2 infant seats we need to bring w/ us).

Yes, I believe you can check carseats for free. Double check with your airline. Whenever we fly, we buy seats for the babies, so we bring our carseats right on board. There is no way our LOs would sit in our lap for more than about 5 minutes at any age without having a fit. It's just not their personality. It's also safer in their carseat and more enjoyable for DH and me.
