Water breaking question...

I haven't really thought of this before, and I can't think of any time - in birthing classes or elsewhere - that I have heard anyone discuss this. (By the way, this is where my mind wanders when work is so quiet/light/pointless)

What if your water broke while you were using the bathroom?

I have always been a heavy water drinker and don't really have light restroom visits. I hope that I would be able to notice a difference in the bathroom experience if that were to happen. In birthing class, they tell you to be able to describe the color, odor, amount, and time. C, O, and A would be pretty difficult to describe if you were peeing at the same time. Is it even possible?

(FWIW, I am sitting here laughing at myself for thinking about what that phone call would sound like for my doctor!)

Re: Water breaking question...

  • I think about that sometimes to, but from what I understand it keeps leaking out afterward so I think that would help clarify some of that-- amount would still be impossible to determine.Huh?

  • you can stop your pee (think kegel) you cannot stop your water leaking...so when your bladder was empty you would continue to have fluid draining....

This, plus....when my water broke, it is not just a drain and it's over. There was a HUGE gush and then it continued to come out over a period of time. If you go to pee and you can't get dry before standing up, or you go to walk out of the bathroom and continue to have gushes, you'll probably want to be calling the doctor! :-)

This is what I've heard. It's a trickle (usually) that continues for a longer period of time.

  • This post made me LOL. FTM, so I have no two cents here, but I just want to say that this sounds like the stuff I think about when my mind starts wandering! Haha! Thanks for asking, I'll have to stalk this thread and see what everyone says.

  • Like one PP said. When my water broke there was a gush, and the gush never stopped everytime I got up to stand or had a contraction even more would come out. Plus to me my water was significantly warmer then my pee was. HTH Big Smile

  • Thanks! I knew that it wasn't just one gush and all done, but I guess I didn't realize how much continues to happen after the initial break.

  • My mom, who was an OB nurse, says I'll know it is amniotic fluid because it smells different than urine.

  • This actually just happened to a friend of mine.  She said that she went to the bathroom but it continued to leak and she wasn't exactly sure if it was in fact her water breaking.  She even called her hubby into the bathroom to smell it (she's a wack-a -doo).  She said once she stood up and it continued to trickle then she knew what it was.

That made me giggle. The thought of my husband inspecting my pee... good stuff. I can see the dumb look he would get on his face because he couldn't believe what I was asking.

  • My water broke when I was over the toilet! It was perfect timing. I went to the hospital because I was crampy and as I was changing into the hospital gown in the bathroom I had to sit down for a second and my water broke when I sat down on the toilet. It didn't really matter though because I was already 9cm and DS came very quickly.
