New to The Bump

New to the Bump and TTC... help?

My hubby and I are TTC, and we've been trying for the past few weeks... Not sure if that's long enough or not, because my mom got preggo with both myself and my sister right away, first try. But anyways, AF is supposed to be coming today, haven't gotten it yet, but with all the Christmas stress it might be a few days late, or will be a few months... I don't really know. First time TTC, and hubby has a slower sex drive than I do, so he's asked for about a week off from sex (we've done it probably 4 or 5 times a week the past few weeks, the poor man =P). I've never laid on my back or anything with my legs in the air trying to 'help them out', because I find that the seminal fluid leaks out as soon as DH pulls out (or I get off him), and I feel the need to clean it up (I'm a clean freak when it comes to my body). I don't douche, or stick anything up my vag afterwards, and I know that they start swimming as soon as DH ejaculates. Don't really have anyone to talk to about this, my mom left me in the cold when I got married last year telling me she doesn't want to hear anything about my sex life or anything like that. Tried to ask her help the other day and she said she didn't want to hear anything. And DH doesn't know anything either. So I'm kinda alone, cause I don't feel comfortable going to my MIL or Step-MIL about it... And my doc is on holidays, and when he's 'off' holidays, it's a new doc... =( I really hope I am preggo. I took a HPT on the 23rd, and it came back negative. Read somewhere it takes from 6-12 days to show up on a HPT, so if I don't get AF, then I'll test again, but I guess I just need reassurance... If I'm preggo, will I get this period b/c it's so close to conception? Sounds like a stupid question, I know, but I have no one else to ask...

  • Wow, many things to discuss here.

If you've only been trying a few weeks to get pregnant, you might want to dial it down and just see how things play out. It may take you one cycle, or a few, or several. Let's not jump the gun.

Do NOT talk to your mom, MIL, etc about your sex life. I can see why your mom would be squeamish about that. it's just not an appropriate conversation to have IMO

You don't need to do any of those old wives' tales that you talk about

Get a copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility, or sign up for fertilityfriend.com. Both will give you amazing insights into your body and will help you figure out what's going on. It sounds like you don't really know much right now (and that's OK, plenty of people don't and still get pregnant), but I think it would be a great resource for you.

If you're pregnant, your period won't show. If you aren't pregnant, you'll get your period. My advice is to wait until you're late, then take a test. It avoids a lot of stress IMO. I think you took a pregnancy test way too early, and you need to wait before you take another one.

And just a word of advice, the word preggo is often frowned upon on some of the boards, so I'd just use pg or pregnant. Just trying to help you avoid flaming.

GL and let us know how it goes.

  • Thank you so much for the advice! Sorry about the word preggo... All my friends use it and it just stuck. I'll stick to pregnant or expecting from now on. =)

I've signed up for fertilityfriend.com, and from the looks of things (haven't gotten that deep into it yet), a lot of my questions will be answered.

No, I don't know that much right now. I've never really thought about learning about pregnancy till now. I'm trying not to stress about anything right now, and I'm waiting till next week to take another test. Although, if my period doesn't come, I'm fairly certain that I'm pregnant, because I've never missed a period before. I've been late, but only by a few days.

As for my mom, I'd never want to talk about my sex life, but about pregnancy, I'd love to talk about it, but she's still squeamish about that. =( I still have you guys to answer my questions though =)

Thanks again Dr. L for all your advice. I'll let everyone know how things progress on my blog.

  • Not pregnant. Just got my period. I was so hopeful, too... Looks like we'll be trying again next cycle.

  • Bummer. But as PP said it usually takes more than one cycle. Check out the TTC boards to get more of your questions answered.
