3 Y/O & Stuttering?

Im not even sure I would call it stuttering, but he just kind of repeats himself, until he can spit the words out ie:" mommy did you get the, ummm, did you get, did you get, did you get my car?"

that type of thing. i dont know if hes just trying to talk too fast out of excitement most of the time, or if this could be a potential speech problem. anyone elses LO do this?

  • We haven't had this yet, but I have some friends that have. It's pretty normal. There was a thread about it not too long ago that might help.

  • Our DS went through a pretty serious stuttering phase a few months ago. We have two speech thearapists in the family so I consulted with both and both reassured me that it is very normal and more common in boys. One of them said something like 50% of boys go through some sort of stuttering phase before the age of 5. The only concern is if it effects their own perception of their ability to speak or if they become ashamed of it because that can lead to worsening of the problem and create a cycle. They both told me to ignore it, focus on the child and let them get their thought out, but do not finish it for him. Don't tell him to slow down or call any attention to it. It can also help to slow down your own speech when talking to him so he starts to understand that not everything has to come out super fast. Their little brains are just working so fast and sometimes they can't process the language fast enough.

I was told that if it persists for more than six months AND past age 4 AND he is aware of it and embarrassed or frustrated by it that the next step would be to contact the school district for an early evaluation. His stutter has pretty much disappeared now though.

  • DD was just approved to start receiving services in January for stuttering. Everyone told me she was fine and not to worry but I knew better. It was going on past 6 months and it was more then 50% of her speech. She has a lot of friends but her teacher told me kids in the class were covering their ears when she spoke. She repeats initial words, sounds, and phrases. This is the program she was approved for. If you're worried, it never hurts to get an evaluation.
