TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

Help! What to do - IUI or take a break?

Oh ladies I feel so torn!  I'm trying to decide between three options - au naturel (no meds, just lots of BD), meds + trigger + TI, or  meds+trigger+IUI.

I will be travelling cd16-18(possibly leave cd15) w/o DH, so I'm very concerned about timing.  On clomid, last two cycles I triggered on cd13 and 15 - meaning TI was 14-15, and 16-17.   If it would work, I'd love to try IUI - but AF came late enough to potentially screw up this cycle.

Also, DH is super overwhelmed and stressed with everything lately.  Part of me wants to back off and just chill for a cycle, and another part of me wants to not waste another second and do everything we can to get KTFU.

Also - I'm switching insurance starting Jan1, so IUI and meds would be covered (80% at least).

HELP - WWYD?

Re: Help! What to do - IUI or take a break?

  • Between your timing potentially not working out due to travel and DH's state of being overwhelmed, I would go for au naturel.  If it works...great!  If not, atleast you didn't waste the $$ on the meds or the added stress of timing the iui.  I wish you luck!

  • Thanks for the input ladies!  I really appreciate it.

I'm 30 - so age isn't as big of a factor yet, but I feel so impatient with everyone around me getting KU and today marking a year since my loss.  Stupid travel getting in the way!

Also I've been doing clomid and my lining has been thin, so we may switch up the meds too - not sure how that might impact our timing.

  • I would have to agree with both of the ladies.  If age isn't a pressing factor, then considering the timing constraints and your DH I would probably opt for au naturel as well.  It would be awesome if it worked, but at least if it didn't you wouldn't have spent $$ on the meds and would be in a better position to proceed the following month.

Best of luck with whichever course of action you decide.

  • Thanks everyone for the thoughtful insight!!

One other thing I just realized I forgot to mention is that after my loss my cycles went totally BSC - Oing anywhere from cd18-65.  I've had one "normal" unmedicated cycle this year, the one right before my last two medicated cycles.  So maybe my body is back on track or maybe doing a natural cycle will lead to a crazy long one (70+days is not cool!)- so that is another concern I have.

  • I probably would do a natural cycle, although I understand feeling like you're wasting time.  We're taking a meds break right now too (I've been almost continuously on meds for the past year and I feel like I need to) but it does feel like I'm wasting a chance since the odds of a natural pregnancy for us are almost zero.  But yes, since you'll be travelling, it might be nice to not have to worry about the timing.  GL with your decision.

Would your RE be willing to run a 7DPO progesterone level when you get back? If it's negative for ovulation, would they be willing to cycle you on Provera so you aren't wasting time?

Good idea!  They were willing to call in a prescription on a previous cycle (not until cd35 though) - so they would probably be willing this time.  They're supposed to return my call tomorrow, so I can ask.  Thanks!

  • I agree with Petra, I would do a natural cycle. and ask the dr for Provera if the cycle starts running long.

  • I would skip a cycle and not waste the meds if they are usually expensive. I know with my insurance I can get my meds before the cycle so I have a couple months of clomid and ovidrel in my drawer. Even if you can only get one month you can get it now and use it later right? That way out will be less expensive?

  • I would skip this month as well, just try on your own and then do the meds and IUI next month with your new insurance.  Especially if there is a chance you will be away and not have great timing.  Best of luck.

  • I agree with everyone else. I know the fear of a super long cycle though! I'm in the middle of one right now. I would def call and see when they'd be willing to do provera if you haven't ovulated yet.

  • I agree with everyone else.  Since your timing may be off, giving yourself (and your DH) a break from treatment may work best... especially if your RE will be willing to call you provera if your cycle gets crazy long.

  • Thank you all so much!  It's now official - we're doing a natural cycle.  I'm nervous and liberated at the same time!  Thank you all for your awesome suggestions.  I'm going to call in my prescriptions today so my current insurance covers them and if this cycle doesn't work, we're going to do a clomid+trigger+iui cycle in Feb.   FX we won't need it!

  • I would also go au natural this cycle too. When my DH was going BSC and needed a break in Aug/Sept...it helped me clear my head too. It seems like you're not going into the best sitch this cycle to begin with so that might be a sign to have a laid back cycle.
