Adenoids Removed?

Today was DS's follow-up appointment for his ear tubes that were inserted two summers ago.  Tubes are out and fluid is back :(

ENT wants to reinsert ear tubes and also remove his adenoids.  Has anyone had a similar experience?  Do you see a difference?  Right now, I don't notice any hearing loss with him.

 Thanks for any advice :)

Re: Adenoids Removed?

  • Both kids had theirs our for different reasons then ears.  The surgery was not bad and neither was the recovery.  With DS2 we did his only set of tubes and adenoids right away because of other health issues.

  • I had my adenoids removed when I was a child, but not due to fluid in the ears.  I can still remember it.  I got sick after surgery and had trouble keeping food down for the next day.  I didn't have any pain at all.  I thought it was a pretty sweet deal since my parents surprised me with a Gameboy in the hospital.

  • Did they do a hearing test?  I had an ear infection when I was pregnant with DS #2, and I had hearing loss for about  a month.

DS #1 had a second round of tubes put in.  We were worried about his speech, and had his hearing tested.  He didn't pass his hearing test in his right ear because of fluid.  The fluid was still in his ear two months later when his tubes were put in.  We also had his adenoids removed. I think it's really common to have adenoids removed with a second round of tubes.   DS has been healthier since his adenoids were removed.

  • Yes, they did a hearing test (or at least they attempted to...DS was not very cooperative!) I can not notice a problem with his hearing (selective at times, but I think he gets that from my DH!)

I'm glad to hear that it's common and it has improved your DS's health.  FIngers crossed it works for mine too!

  • Matt had tubes put in for chronic ear infections (9 of them in something like 4 months). He was a mouth breather, would snore, and would get a lot of colds/sinus infections. His adenoids were enlarged so they decided to remove them. He missed 2 days of daycare, and then was fine.
