Babies: 6 - 9 Months

RSV/Bronchiolitis

DD is 6 months today (happy birthday, baby girl!) and has a pretty bad case of RSV & bronchiolitis. We took her to the pedi on Christmas Eve after she had been pretty congested for a few days and then got a nasty cough, and she tested positive for RSV and an ear infection - my poor baby. Now she's started wheezing, but we took her to the pedi this morning and they said to just keep on eye on her breathing. She also has eczema, so she will likely develop asthma like DH.

Just curious if anyone else is dealing with RSV and what you're doing to ease LO? So far we've tried saline nose drops, playing with her in a steamed-up bathroom, elevating her crib mattress and putting her humidifier on high every night. TIA!

Re: RSV/Bronchiolitis

  • we went through this with DS around your DD's age and it was just terrible. So little you can do for them when they are so small and feeling so miserable. I think you are doing all the things you can do right now (saline, elevated crib, steam, etc). Keep a close eye on the breathing and if there is any "belly breathing" or struggle, call your pedi. They may prescribe a breathing treatment to help her out. Hang in there. It is really rough on you as well as your LO.

  • We're going through it right now.  It's been going on for about a week and a half right now.  Pedi told us to do breathing treatments on DS every 4 hours as needed.  Thankfully we've never needed to do them that often.  They do seem to help him with the coughing, but if we give him more than 3 a day, he does not sleep.  At all.  And then gets super pissed off because he is tired.  We also using PediaCare gentle vapor plug ins in addition to everything you listed.  Hope your LO feels better soon!

  • we're also going through this. We are using a humidifer (make sure to get cool mist if you don't already have one). In addition to that, we're doing breathing treatments, zyrtec, an oral antibiotic, and a topical antibiotic in the ear. We've already had tubes and they are draing sooo much. My poor baby has been a sponge for everything.

  • I went tru this recently. DD is still coughing a little, but doing so much better.

We did everything you mentioned, but we also did the albuterol therapy which helped her a lot...also I use baby's vicks vaporub on her feet, chest, and back. Also, make sure you clean/wash your humidifier with soap and water a least every 2 days. I used one, and humidifiers are great but if you don't wash them they just create more bacteria in the air. So they are good only if you keep them clean.

Make sure you clean her nose, my DD got an eye infection because of her congested nose.

Hope your DD feels better soon!

  • Also, I forgot to mention I gave DD at least 1 ounce of yogurt to prevent an yeast infection because of the antibiotics for her ear infection and to protect her intestines since she had diarrhea.
