26mo old DD slaps, bites, spits

We don't do these things in our house. DD goes to a sitter's who does not tolerate that behavior as well.

When DD gets mad she does the above. And, she does it to me and not my husband. She slapped me so hard on the face, it stung for a good 20 mins. She knew she did wrong and she does apologize for doing it.

We tell her it hurts, give her time out, try to figure out why she is frustrated, taught her how to "take a break" when she does get upset, and various other things.

For those that have gone through this, what did you do?

  • Is she still pretty non-verbal?  Some kids act out like that because they are frustrated and don't have the words to express themselves.

I know you said she apologized for hitting you but did you get down on her eye level after she was calm and explain why we don't hit, i.e. "we don't hit because it hurts, how would you feel if mommy hit you?"  My DD went through a phase where she wanted to kick things (mostly our dogs) and conversations like that seem to have stopped it (I've probably just jinxed myself).  Also, maybe give her something physical she is allowed to do when she's mad like punching a pillow or something?  Good luck.
