Babies: 6 - 9 Months

9 mo old refusing bottle

Bottle-feeding has never been easy for us, but she is now completely refusing, even first thing in the morning after having not eaten in 12 hours!  Last week she outright refused 3 bottles in a row, so aside from me nursing her before she went to bed, she had no milk.  She seems content (aside from getting upset when we try to give her the bottle), has wet diapers, is still sleeping through the night and taking naps, I'm just concerned that her milk intake has plummeted on the days that I don't nurse her.  Milk in the bottle is pumped breastmilk.  She has 3 meals of solids (and we are mixing some of the milk into her solids so that she gets some of it), but she eats 3 oz, 4 oz max.   Any advice??

  • J has decided that he doesn't like to drink from the bottle over the past couple of months. So while I am at work, my MIL gives J him his  milk in a sippy or open cup. Like the PP post said, try that!

  • We've been practicing with the sippy cup, but she only takes a couple sips.  I can't imagine her drinking more than a couple oz at the very most.

Are you offering a sippy cup in place of a bottle at the normal feeding times?

Those few extra oz from the sippy are better than none. We'r eworking on offering a sippy cup now just for practice. It just has water in it. I'm hoping by 10 months, she'll be taking one or two of her "bottles" from sippy cups instead.

  • We're also just doing water, but he does much better from a regular open cup than his sippy. I'd probably try something smaller (a plastic shot glass?) if I was going to risk breastmilk.

And I agree that a bit from a sippy is better than nothing from a bottle.

Good idea, though the image of baby with BM in a shot glass is cracking me up. :)
