DD needed one pair, on a rare bad day maybe 2. We did the cold turkey to panties and she was "trained" overnight.
We did the same for my son however it took 2-3 months to be fully trained. He had a month of pee accidents, a month of poo accidents and then another set of pee accidents...finally he put it all together. We needed much more undies for him, one think that worked was he had his fav Cars undies and when he kept pooping in them (I was throwing some away), we started running low so I went and bought the cheap whities and told him that McQueen drove off because he got tired of being pooped on : ) It helped though.
we just did no pants (nothing below her waist) for a few days, and walked around with the small potty next to her for whenever she started to go. she thought underwear was like a diaper and REALLY did not want to wear any, and when she did, she immediately peed in it.
Re: How many pairs
We did pull-ups but the initial few days were 6-7 pairs, which was more than the number of diapers she usually went through.
Both of my older kids PTed at 2.5.
