Do you use your food processor?

s/o from jodi's post below about hers being dug out for Christmas.  If you don't use yours then what do you do if you have a bunch of stuff to chop?  Like the other day I cut up a bunch of onions and potatoes for soup.  Do you just do that by hand?[Poll]

Re: Do you use your food processor?

  • I rarely use it. Mostly when I make salsa and when I am making a soup that needs the veggies pureed.

  • I got one for our wedding in 2004 and it sat unused until last year. I chopped by hand. Then I discovered the joys of my processor and it's used all the time. LOL

I use mine a couple times a week. For breads and pizza dough it's less hassle than my Kitchen Aid mixer. I do sometimes use it for shredding large amounts of cheese and sometimes for chopping if the end result doesn't matter.

I usually use my immersion blender for pureeing soups.

I just got an immersion blender and I'm amazed at how much easier it is!  I use my food processor for chopping 3-4x a week I'd say.  I use my kitchenaid for dough (I do double batches and my FP is just an 8 cup).  I also use it for shredding cheese.  Forgot about that.  It would take me hours to chop the amount of stuff we go through!

  • I have a mini one that I use! I love it.
I love it for grating cheese, because I hate grating by hand. I use it to make pesto. Stuff like that.
When my DD was a baby, I used it tons for homemade baby food.

  • Chop by hand.  If I put one more thing on my counter, Joe might end up in a padded cell.  He can't handle ANY clutter.  I guess I could push the booze back to the deep end of the cabinet and put the processor up front, for easy access.  But I guess we can also see which I'd rather have easier access to!  ;)
  • Mine gets used regularly- often enough that the bowl is all scratched up and looks crappy so I need to think about ordering a replacement one soon.

In the last few days I've used it to make hummus, chop a large amount of peppers & onions, and make Hollendaise sauce.  In general I find that it gets used a couple times per week when I'm actually cooking (I go through phases where I pretty much don't cook at all and instead we live off of cheese, crackers and fruit.)

  • I definitely rather chop by hand then wash all the parts. I use it pretty regularly for making pasta bc the hand method is too scary for me. Also use it pretty often for chicken meatballs or other meat grinding. But stuff I can do on a cutting board or the smaller mandolin?  Definitely not dragging it out.

Ps I will drag it out if I need a lot of consistently sized potato or zucchini.

  • only if I have a LOT of chopping.  We keep the bigger appliances in a cabinet in the laundry room.  I have one of those slap chopper things from The Pampered CHef that I use for chopping an onion or if I have just a few things to chop...that stays in teh kitchen and is easily accesible.  But if its more than that, or I need to shred cheese, I definately get it out.  If I do a big freezer meal cooking day, its a necessity.  So I'd say on average I use it once a month.
  • Chop by hand. I used my immersion blender for pureeing baby food, smoothies etc until it broke. I'm asking for a new one for my bday next month.
  • What blade do you use for chopping your veggies?

  • slicing!

  • I use it 1-2x a year when I make one item in particular.  The rest of the time it takes up space.  I am using my mixer a lot more, though.

  • I do not have a true food processor with multiple blades for different types of chopping/slicing. (It's just one blade - good for finely chopping and blending, but not for slicing.)  I use a mandolin slicer some, and do some stuff by hand. And in general, I do not cook as much as you do. :)
  • I pretty much only use mine to make hummus, once a week at the most.

  • I used to use my food processor all the time.  Back when I was a good cook.

Now that I have kids, I don't spend time planning out elaborate meals and searching for all the right ingredients at gourmet shops.  I just ordered a subscription to Bon Appetit, though, because I really miss how much fun it was to cook a GOOD meal.

I just got an immersion blender for Christmas, so I am really happy to hear everyone say they use those even more than a food processor.  I am loving mine and have looked for excuses to use it multiple times a day for the last 3 days.
