Would you do anything? DD had some weight loss

DD was sick on Thursday night into Friday, Saturday and Sun. morning. She kept almost nothing down. She perked up yesterday and ate a turkey sandwich and a couple of pieces of frozen pizza.

We put her on the scale this morning and she lost 3 lbs. She was tiny to begin with and now she's so thin. She almost looks frail to me.

How concerned would you be with the weight loss? I am wondering if I should pick her up some PediaSure for her or just keep letting her eat as much as she wants. Her appetite is back to normal.

  • If it was my DS, who is tiny, I would get pediasure.  But, she may put it back on (or at least most of it) in a couple days once she gets her fluids back up too.

  • Not concerned at all. My DD is also tiny, but she'll rebound just fine and start eating When she feels better.

  • I wouldn't worry.  Offer some healthy calories and work on rehydrating (gatorade or pedialyte) her.  Generally most of the weight lost when you're sick seems to be hydration and it'll come back after a few days.  You know how tiny my kids are and we all were a mess after the stomach flu hit our whole house.  They all gained it back in a few weeks and none seemed the worse for it thought it was a rough couple days.
  •  I wouldn't worry.  When DS2 was 10 months old, he had a stomach bug that dropped him from 18 pounds to 16 pounds.  He was sick for 10 days, but once he was eating normally, he eventually gained the weight back.  If she's eating and drinking fluids normally, she'll be fine.

  • Since the weight loss was caused by her being sick I wouldn't worry.  As soon as she gets back to her normal eating habits she will gain it all back.
  • She was sick so she didn't eat - as soon as she feels better, she will eat and gain the weight back.  I would not do a thing for an illness that is now over.  My DD started a new med for ADHD this fall and we knew she would lose weight in the beginning and once her body adjusted, she has started to put the weight back on.  There is no reason to add in calerios or anything to a healthy child who normally eats just fine but was sick.
