Food Allergy

Dairy intolerance - introducing solids ?

Any moms of EBF LOs who have a severe dairy intolerance/possible allergy have experience introducing solids?  Do you have any recommendations?  LO is closing in on 6 months.  I'm nervous that he may have reactions to other foods.  He is so sensitive, that even if I have a small amount of "hidden" dairy in something he will have bloody diarrhea for about 48 hours.  Sad

Re: Dairy intolerance - introducing solids ?

  • ds was diagnosed with dairy allergy at 4 or 5 months.  with solids, we basically would introduce a veggie/fruit and only introduce one at a time for several days to allow for time for a reaction to occur (if it was going to), and so we would know what the reaction was to.  we were also advised by our pediatrician to avoid the other common allergens - no egg, peanuts/treenuts, etc - until he had allergy testing at 1 year.  we knew soy was OK cause he had been exposed to soy formula no problem, so we did soy yogurt and cheeses, and not sure how we knew but we never avoided wheat either...

  • My son was diagnosed at 8wks old.  Like previously said, only introduce one food at a time.  Wait at least 3 days, before you introduce a different food, so you know if your LO will have a reaction.  I was also told to avoid the other high allergen foods, until at least 1 yr old, just to be sure.  We got lucky and he didn't end up having any other food allergies.

  • Read all labels really carefully.  I fed DS#3 infant cereal and he reacted.  Turns out there was whey in the ingredient list.  It never occured to me that there could be milk in cereal but I have since learned to never make any assumptions.
