Taytee- have you seen this a lot lately?

It's some sort of virus (my doc thinks).  I don't think its the flu.  Symptoms are:

fever varying between 100.8-101.7 (without meds)

chills

sweating a ton

body aches

it starts with horrible headaches the first day, but none after that

malaise

slight nausea on and off

I have a fever for the 5th day in a row today.  I am scared sh!tless that my husband or baby are going to get this.  It's horrible.

I am hoping this is something that you've seen in the ER lately and you can tell me that it lasts exactly 5 days.  :)

Thanks.  I am so tired of this.  Because I have a fever tonight I had to cancel my niece and nephew's trip up here tomorrow and my whole family is postponing our Christmas celebration because we were supposed to host it.  I am super bummed.

  • Add a sore throat to that and a couple points to the fever and it's how I was the week before Thanksgiving. The worst of it lasted about 7 days but I didn't really kick it until last week, and even still I have a residual sore throat at night. DD and DH didn't get it, which is a miracle, but I think I got it from Zee and his sister because they most certainly had it first. I tested positive for flu, but the kids weren't tested.

I hope you feel better soon, it really sucks. :-(

    Thank you.

I had a sore throat maybe the first day, but that's it.  I wonder if it is the flu.  I wasn't tested but my doc said it was likely some sort of virus.  Ugh.

  • I've seen a lot of this...I saw my first person with flu on Tuesday with similar symptoms, but most have seemed to be more of a virus, but I guess it's possible it could be flu.  I've given some people antibiotics, but it's too early to tell if they're working or not.  I take care of older people so am a little more cautious with antibiotics...probably a virus.

  • My dh started with something exactly like this earlier this week.  Headache first, other symptoms shortly after.  He walked through the door like death warmed over.  I sent him to take an epsom salt bath to remove toxins (illness), gave him 2 quarts of water, juiced a bunch of veggies, gave him 10,000 IU's of Vitamin D and 2 huge scoops of Vitamin C, a double dose of elderberry and some master tonic.  Sent him to bed early and he was 100% in the morning.  I still urged (ok, dragged) him to the chiropractor the next day just to boost his immune system even though he was feeling better.  I refuse to have us be sick this year at Christmas, I had strep last year on vacation and it suuuuuucked.  All I can say is thank God for natural medicine because my DH is the worst when he gets sick.  He doesn't just get sick, he gets man sick.

    Hope you feel better soon!

I'm curious why you don't think it's the flu. It sounds for all the world like the flu. And even a negative flu test doesn't entirely rule out flu. It's not a very sensitive test.

  • My great-grandmother use to do exactly what carlinlp did. Well kind of...we has to do the Epsom salt bath and eat a quarter cup of orange juice concentrate. No joke. She then slathered us in vapo rub. No idea why the vapo rub but whatever. We always hated the whole thing but I was rarely sick as a kid.

  • Yep. Viral syndrome. We see it everyday. Kids. Adults. That's what viruses do =( They make you feel like crap. It can last days to weeks, it just depends. Mono begins with a fever and then the malaise can last months!

My legs and wrists are very achy and I fear I'm coming down with something too.

It's been a VERY mild winter so far though. Not a lot of strep, flu or pedi fevers yet. Yet. Happy first day of winter. It usually picks up from here.

ETA: It doesn't matter if it's the flu or not. The flu is just a virus. A virus by any other name still sucks! And for the most part, fever is self limiting and you're likely to get better without any further treatment unless you have complicating features like a cough with increasing shortness of breath or severe weakness. I don't believe in Tamiflu and some of the allergic reactions I've seen to it are wicked bad.
