Baby Names

Thoughts on Jane...

My husband and I were just discussing this name last night.  It's his aunt's name, who we both adore, and I think it might be cute for a baby girl (we don't know what we're having yet).  Does it sound "dated"?  I guess I used to always think of Jane as an "older" person's name!  I'd love to hear some opinions!

  • Love, love, love it. If we didn't already have a Jack, it would absolutely be on our list. (Jack and Jane? Way too cutesy for me)

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!  It's SO underused IMO.  Not plain or boring at all.  It would be refresing to hear this name make a comeback.

  • Love it! I don't know where it ranks with SS, but I don't know a single Jane. That makes me like it more. I think it sounds timeless and classy. Not trendy at all.

  • Thank you, everyone!   The more I've thought about it, the more it's grown on me - and I'm glad to know I'm not alone in thinking it could be a great name!  I so appreciate your feedback! :)

  • I find it exceptionally boring. I appreciate that you're considering it because of a beloved aunt, however. Knowing the backstory, I feel bad telling you that I don't like it -- sorry :(

  • I love Jane. My grandmother was named Jane and if we have another girl we plan to name her in her honor. It does sound a tiny bit dated but I plan on nicknaming her Janey to make it sound a touch more youthful.

  • Another vote for love! It's on our list if this baby is a girl. I associate it with strong women like Jane Goodall and Jane Jacobs.
  • I love the name Jane! We used it as the mn for our 1st daughter in honor or my grandmother. After the fact I sort of wished we would have saved it and used it as a first name for another baby. LOVE it! :)
  • Love it. It's on our girl list.

  • My DD is named Jane! Her name is Jane Collett (mn is a family name, pronounced like Collette.)

I obviously love it as a first name but really dislike if it is used as a filler mn because I think that doesn't do it justice. I will say that I get tons of compliments on it and it really fits her. To me, Jane is not a boring name, it is spunky and firey and asthetically pleasing to hear and say. I think it is a great choice! We do sometimes call her Janey as well.

Halle was another one of the names we were thinking!  I love that combination!  Beautiful :)

  • I think it's a simple, classic, timeless name.

That said, like many other names which fall into that category, I personally find it boring.

I would never side eye someone for using it, though, and if it has meaning to you I think you should!
