Cleaning Process - pumps

Hi Ladies,

I hope you are doing well! This is my first post since my little guy arrived last Thursday - it is hard to believe he is already a week old! My question is on cleaning bottles and breast pump parts (my supply didn't seem to satisfy him so I am now pumping so I could monitor how much I am  giving him). My issue is that I cannot seem to understand the process of cleaning of parts for everything - this is a dumb question I know but what are you doing?

Do you put in the dishwasher, boil, microwave in bags, use soap and water - what are you doing?

Congrats on all of the outside babies and good luck to those with inside ones!

Thanks in advance!

  • I boiled once to sanitize before the first use. Now i use mild dish soap and hot water on the pump parts, as rec'd by LC.

This! I haven't used mine yet, but the manual it came with said to boil it the first time then to wash the parts seperately with water and soap after that. It also specifies how to wash each part, how to take it apart and put it back together (as to not damage the suction)

Did yours come with a manual?

  • As PP said I use soap and water. If you keep the pump parts in the fridge you only have to wash them once a day. I do that sometimes if I'm really busy, just make sure you take them out of the fridge 5-10 minutes before you need to pump or else they are way too cold lol.

  • per the directions with my pump, I boiled the parts (not the tubes though) for 10 minutes before first use.  Now I just clean with soap and hot water and let them dry on a paper towel on the counter.

  • Same as PP. Also, its good to know that what you pump does not equal what baby is getting. Babies are much better at extracting milk than pumps.

This exactly, I might start re-boiling them once a week or so also.

  • After each pump I run hot water through the cups and rinse out the bottles...  From there, when needed I'll either hand-wash with soap/water and once in a while I'll put the parts in the dishwasher and run them then...  But I'll only use a bottle once before it goes into the dishwasher (which has a sani-cycle)...

I never sterilized a set before I used it, but then again, the two kits I've used have been provided by the hospital and came pre-done...
