Pregnant after a Loss

Subchorionic Hematoma

So a bit of background - I am currently 8w4d, but have had 4 miscarriages in the past. Three were natural and one was a missed miscarriage.

I had to go to the ER at 7w2d as I was experiencing some pretty heavy bleeding. They did an ultrasound and the baby measured 7w2d as thought, and I got to see the little heart beating away. However, doc then told me there was a large blood clot in my uterus which I guess the technical term for his subchorionic hematoma (sp?). Doc also said this is quite normal and that most women with this go on to have a completely healthy and normal pregnancy, but I have been freaking out ever since I got the news almost waiting for something to go wrong.

Just wondering if any of you have any experience with this or any advice??

Re: Subchorionic Hematoma

  • I am so sorry for your losses.  This seems to be a pretty common question.  I was also diagnosed with a SCH at 7 weeks.  I had a loss in June and completely freaked out when I saw all that bright red blood.  I was convinced that I had lost this baby too.  I went to the Dr. and everything was perfectly fine.  I am now, almost 13 weeks, and the bleeding has stopped.  I had an episode from weed 7 to week 10.  Once a week I was bleeding bright red blood, that turned into brown spotting, that went away.  I know how scary it is, but my Dr. wasn't concerned and told me that it wasn't going to affect the baby.  She said it should reabsorb into the body.  I went for an u/s yeaterday and everything had subsided and there was no blood found.

I know how scary this is, but you should be fun.  If you have any questions, PM me and I'll be more than happy to answer whatever I can.  Try not to sweat it, it's a pretty common thing.

    Congrats on this baby!

  • I had a SCH with this pregnancy. They found it at my first u/s at 5w6d and tracked it every 2 weeks until I was 12 weeks. The nurse told me that it was really common and that most of them weren't even diagnosed. Everything has been good so far.

  • I have a large SCH that was diagnosed at 13 weeks when I experienced some pretty dramatic bleeding. The SCH was 2 x 2.7 cm in the ER and twice that size two days later on a follow up ultrasound. Two weeks later, it covered the entire cervix and posterior of my uterus. I was referred to the MFM specialist for a better look and she confirmed the size. Generally, though, she wasn't terribly concerned. While mine is large, she said it could be there for the duration - or go away in a week. I might bleed intermittently the entire time it's around - and I have been for over 8 weeks now.  At my 20w a/s follow up, it was down to about 4.5 cm on its longest side.

LO doesn't seem fazed and was measuring a few days ahead at the MFM exam. My placenta is anterior, so the SCH doesn't seem to be putting it at risk. With the exception of a couple days rest back at 13 weeks when I was diagnosed, I've not been on any restrictions and able to do all my normal activities. I don't exercise, but that's mostly because I'm lazy.  My Doppler really helps reassure me and I'm now feeling movement, so that helps, too.

  • Yes, I had one this time. Gushing blood at 5w5d but baby looked great on US, bleed was just GIGANTIC compared to that little baby with a heartbeat.

Subsequent US showed the baby growing and bleed shrinking away and *knock on wood* no other bleeds since that time.

I did a lot of research on SCH, like I'm sure you and the other ladies here have done, and it seems like there are a lot of success stories out there. Bleeding is never ever fun though, big hugs!

  • I'm glad your LO is doing well in there!  I also had a SCH which was diagnosed after a MAJOR bleed at 11 weeks.  It stopped pretty suddenly and my u/s showed everyone was healthy and happy in there still.  The next ultrasound (NT scan) a few days later showed that it had gotten quite a bit smaller already and I continued to have heavy brown spotting for about 2 weeks which has finally gone away this week.  So far everything else seems to be just about fine, and they almost always resolve by 20 weeks.  You may experience additional bleeding episodes, and while you should still visit or talk to your doctor about each one, my doctor reassured me that it wouldn't necessarily spell the end of everything for me.

Good luck!  I really hadn't heard much about them until this board, and I didn't pay much attention until I had one too!

  • I totally understand how you feel! I was just told on Monday when I has an u/s that I had an sch too, never heard of it before either! I had no bleeding or anything, so I had no idea anything was going on...my doctor put me on bedrest for 2 weeks and I go back for a follow up u/s in 2 weeks. They say they are very commom and all the responses I got on here were very positive, so that has helped me out a lot!

  • With my first pregnancy, I was diagnosed with a subchorionic hemorrhage.  Though I lost that pregnancy, it had nothing to do with the hemorrhage and the tech reassured that they see a lot of women with them.
