Herniated belly button

Anyone else's LO have or ever had a herniated belly button? My LO has had it since like 3 weeks old. It looks so crazy though because it sticks straight out and because he always has gas its even worse. Pedi said its nothing to be concerned about and should get smaller over the next year, but if it doesn't he would need surgery!! Anyone else experience this?

Re: Herniated belly button

  • Yep, Evie has one too. At first I thought it was going to be an outie belly button, but asked the pedi because it sticks out so far and sometimes goes in and out with movement. She said it was a slight hernia but nothing to worry about. I think she said they usually resolve themselves by 1-2 years old. So weird looking though!

  • My daughter had one. Someone told me an old wives tale about taping a nickel over it. I figured, why not?  It worked!  After a week of taping it down with a nickel her belly button is now completely normal!

  • My DD still has one and it's pretty large.  our pedi said to give it at least another year to see if it will heal up on its own.

  • Anna has a pretty prominent (to us, at least) outie - which my pediatrician calls a slight hernia.   But yeah, no big deal.   She said if it bothers her as she gets older, they can do a surgery to address the cosmetic issue, but other than that, its fine.   I'll let her decide what she wants to do with it!

  • One of my boys had one.  The original plan was to watch it, and hopefully it would resolve itself.  But his continued to grow (about the size of a cherry tomato) and ended up with a perforation that had bowel passing through (I believe they called it a "communicating" hernia).  He had the surgery, and no problems ever since.  If it stays "non-communicating" I don't think there's any immediate concern.

  • DS1's was HUGE, think almost the size of a golf ball and it went away.  DS2 had a slightly enlarged one but it went away too.  GL!

  • Bennett's was the size of a lemon when he was six weeks old.  I warned my mom before she came at New Years that it looked like her grandson had a second nose growing out of his belly.  When she saw it for herself, she said she was grateful to have had warning because she was dumbfounded.  Well, a year later, it just looks like a normal belly button, if a little big!
  • Andrew had one.  It went away on its own at about 8 months or so. (he also had double inguinal hernia's too, which he had surgery for when he was 10 months)

Funny - I just looked back through some pictures b/c I couldn't remember when it resolved, and it was clearly there last Christmas (the cousins thought it was hilarious to poke at it) and it was gone just over a month later.
