Babies: 6 - 9 Months

From STTN to waking many times

One of our 6.5 month olds has sttn since she was 10 weeks old. She'd go down easily at 7:30pm and soothe herself to sleep and wake at 7am. She was a dream. Recently, she has started waking during the night. She'll cry out and we'll have to soothe her back to sleep. My first thought was teething. She has the signs: drooling, red cheeks, diaper rash...

Tonight has been awful. While she went down easily at 7:30, she woke around 9 screaming. She stops right when I pick her up. She falls back to sleep easily in my arms but when I put her down, she's screaming again within minutes. This is what we worked so hard to avoid for the last 6.5 months. She used to be a great self-soother.

Has anyone experienced this?

Re: From STTN to waking many times

  • My guess is teeth...My DS was a great sleeper til the 4 month wakeful.  Then he went back to sleeping great from 4.5 to 6 months and then from 6 months to 8 months he slept like crapola...he got two teeth just before 7 months and I think he's working on some now.  His sleeping has improved on its own again over the last few weeks.  If it is truly the teeth there isn't much you can do, try tylenol and or advil (I found advil works better).

    PS hello from Saskatchewan!

  • Xander started STTN at 9 weeks old (9PM-6AM) but at 5 months old started waking every 2 hours so we ended up bedsharing and he would nurse constantly. Then about 4 days ago he cut his first tooth. He has STTN the last 3 nights (fingers crossed it continues). So in our case, teething seemed to be the culprit. Good luck!

And PS hello from the booming metropolis of Sarnia

  • We are experiencing the same thing. The last time this happened it was because she was cutting her first teeth. DD is cutting teeth again, but this time I think it might be more related to the whole object permanence thing as the tylenol isn't making things better.

My suggestion would be to try giving your LO a dose of tylenol about a half hour before they go to bed and see if this helps.

Something I keep trying to remind myself is that these babies are human beings and ever changing. Just because something happens tonight, or for a few nights, doesn't necessarily mean that this will be the new pattern. Just try and relax and remind yourself if LO STTN before, they will likely be able to do it again...there is probably just something else going on.

  • could be teething, a cold/allergies/sinus, ear infection
  • Same thing happened to us.  My little guy was sleeping through the night perfectly until about six and half months.  Then he was up almost every hour.  I think it was teething, because he cut both bottom teeth and now he's back to sleeping right through.  Hang in there!
