Green stools?

Baby only gets breastmilk and since last night, his stools have been more watery and green. I'll call the doctor tomorrow if it's not back to normal, but I read it could mean a milk imbalance. Anyone have this problem?

Re: Green stools?

  • Yup with both my babies. I would block nurse with no pumping to see if it resolves. It can take a week or at least. I had to block nurse with my first for most of our nursing relationship, any time I switched to regular (just on breast per feed) we started to have trouble again. Good luck

Is block nursing just letting him finish on one breast before switching?  I've been pumping twice a day to build a little freezer stash so I can leave the house for more than 2 hours.  Could 2 pumping sessions be increasing my supply too much?  I usually pump 10-15 minutes or so.  I thought he had acid reflux, but now with the green poop, I'm thinking he's getting too much foremilk.  The symptoms are very similar.

  • Block nursing you do one breast per feeding, and then if later they are still hungry you put them back to the same breast.

  • Are you taking an iron supplement? I was on ferrous sulfate and it made my sons stools green.

No, just the same prenatals I've been taking all throughout pregnancy.

  • We're on day 8 of this actually. My son is on BM exclusively, bottles during the weekdays and nursed all other times.  He has been acting fine, no fevers or extra fussiness, but is battling diaper rash becuase of the frequency of the stools.  Dr said if it isn't cleared by tomorrow than to come in.  They seem to think it is a GI bug and can last 7-10 days. His stools are varying shades of green and will range from normal consistency and amount to being a very small amount of mucousy consistency.

Big question is how is your baby acting?
