Biting

Sorry if this is asked a lot - I went back about 10 screens and didn't see a post about it.

DS got his 2 bottom teeth at 4.5 months, and since then he occasionally bites while feeding.  He recently got 3 teeth on top, and the biting has been much more frequent lately.  I usually take him off, say "no biting" sternly (which just makes him laugh) and wait about 30 seconds before relatching.  If he does it again immediately, we stop and try again if he's hungry later.  I try to catch him before he does it and stick my finger in to break the latch, but I feel like it's making me paranoid!

I'm guessing this has to do with teething, but I'm wondering if there is anything else I can try to get him to stop.  It hurts!!  Do I just have to tough it out?

Re: Biting

  • In my experience, it's mostly toughing it out until he learns. Now I only feed when he's really hungry, and if he bites or if I notice that he stopped actively nursing, I unlatch him. If he intentionally bites (has only happened a couple of times), I unlatch him, say "Ouch, no biting!" and put him down in his pack n play or crib immediately. It always results in him crying, but I don't pick him up for a couple of minutes so he learns that it's not ok. I also assume that he's done and don't put him back on. He seems to have learned, but we still only have the 2 bottom teeth (since 5mo old)
