Babies: 6 - 9 Months

If you have 2+ children---

Here is one of the issues I'm having--- the boys rooms are very close together--right across the hall, as is ours.  They both sleep with their doors cracked, but even if completely shut you can still hear crying, especially in the middle of the night.

The waking for DS2 is just out of hand now---he's learned to roll in his crib so maybe that has to do with it.  I don't think it's teething again, at least not right now.  The only way to get him to return to sleep is a bottle--and I'm hating that.  So we've tried small doses of letting him CIO---only if he's "whining" more than crying (personal choice).  But I wondered how you have done this with other kids in the house trying to sleep?????

To top it off---DS1 has been waking up to pee in the middle of the night and calls out for me--so that also wakes DS2 up.  UGH!  Glad he's potty trained at night--but OMG.....I need more than the 4-5 hours of sleep I'm getting a night (and that's broken sleep).

ETA:  If you did full out "CIO"/ferber type method--- how did it go with having other kids in the house?  DS2's cries are blood curdling.  Seriously.  I so don't want to do this--but it's not looking good.

Re: If you have 2+ children---

  • Sleeping is so precious in our house and we're all tired.  I'm fortunate, DD1 is a heavy sleeper and will sleep through DD2's crying at night.  DD2 on the other hand is an extremely light sleeper.

DD1 used to wake each night for a nightmare, potty, etc and the chain effect would begin of everyone in our house awake.  Lately, she's been pretty good STTN.  I think as your DS1 bladder becomes more mature he can sleep better through the night too. I've heard several ppl use a noise machine successfully.   I turn on the b-room fan and that usually puts DD2 back to sleep.

It's really hard, I totally understand what you're going through and hopefully, we'll both get 'good' sleepers as they grow older.

  • Ditto on the sound machines.  We have one in each room too and I shut their doors when I go to bed.  Ds1 is a heavy sleeper though, so not much wakes him up.

  • Mine have all gotten used to sleeping through crying and/or yelling from their siblings.  They have cd players in their rooms and listen to a lullaby cd at bedtime, but it doesn't play all night.  If the baby cries and the big girls wake up, they just go right back to sleep.  There was an adjustment period when it wasn't quite that easy and my toddler would cry if awakened, but thankfully that has passed!

I actually have one in both rooms.  And in DS2's room I also have a humidifier.  Isn't that crazy?!!!  I know DS1's should be louder but he's got some sensory issues so sometimes the lightest sounds seem much louder to him.

  • each boy has rain sounds going all night long. It muffles the bulk of the noises. I guess I'm fortunate DS1 is a very hard sleeper. You could put a monitor in your older DSs room so you can hear when he calls you.

My DH also helps and we take turns getting up at night.

  • We're dealing with the same issues except LO is in our room which just complicates everything even more. We just keep DD's door closed and she does pretty good. We have a monitor in her room so we can hear her if she wakes. I thought about doing a sound machine, but my concern would be creating more habits to break down the road.

  • We have the same set up and we have a fairly loud sound machine in both rooms which seems to help.
