Getting twins to sleep on a flat surface?

I have 7 week old twins.  When we first came home from the hospital, we tried to put our LOs in a cosleeper in our room.  That did not work!  We found that the only way they would sleep for any length of time was in their bouncy seats.  Now at 7 weeks, I still can't get them to sleep in anything flat.  They will sleep in the swing (even if its not swinging) and their bouncy seats.  But anything flat (crib, Pack n Play, cosleeper) they wake up within 15-20 minutes, if they fall asleep at all.  They do not have reflux and are pretty content babies.  They will sleep 3-4 hour stretches in the bouncy seats at night....but I would love to get them sleeping in their cribs or cosleeper.  Any advice?

  • We had that problem with our boys at that age, especially for naps. At 7w I started reading HSHHC and I started following Weissbluth's advice regarding recognizing drowsy cues and a general nap schedule for young infants. It honestly worked from day 1. Before that I would attempt naps in the bouncy, the swing, sometimes the crib and there was no telling how long either of them would sleep. But the first time I tried his method, I put them down in their crib, tiptoed out of the room ... and there was silence. For an hour and a half. And from that point on for the most part they took regular, consistent naps. So it might be worth a try!

Also, are you sure you've ruled out silent reflux? (It comes up their throats but they don't actually spit up, so it can be harder to detect that it's going on.) My boys both had reflux and one of them had the silent version initially so it took us a while to figure out what was happening with him.

  • My babies also started prefering the chairs around that point. At three months one was then happy to go in the crib. The other who still spits up a lot is in the chair but I would rather have him sleep at an angle then medicate him (he doesn't have the symptoms of real reflux, doesn't scream when spitting up etc) because there are risks with the medication as well. I found I was much happier when just accepted that at this point they will do things when they are ready as long as I keep trying occasionally :)
  • Mine don't like lying flat on their backs...unfortunately they like lying on their tummies.  I used to put them on their stomachs in the crib during the day for tummy time and they'd fall right asleep.  So I'm keeping them in their rock and play's which is inclined while they sleep and hope to transition to a crib when they can role over which my Dr OKed tummy sleeping then.
