Washington Babies

DH's view of my "must have" list

Here's my list:
- mattresses
- carseats
- stroller
- dresser
- changing pad for top of dresser & covers
- hangers
- rocking chair/glider
- garbage pail
- diapers
(basically all we have is the two cribs and the clothes/blankets from our shower)

His response --
Why do we need a garbage pail/can?  Can't we just throw the diapers in a ziplock and toss them in a box or something and he'll take the trash out every morning?  Really, a box????
Diapers -- but we don't even know what size we need.  Shouldn't we wait until the babies are here to buy diapers?  Um, no -- I don't feel like going to the grocery store on the way home from the hospital but he volunteered to do it so no diapers.

I totally expected a discussion around the dresser or rocker, but diapers or a garbage pail?  Am I crazy or are these no-brainers?

I don't even know what to say -- those were some of the least expensive things on my list Smile

  • HAHA! He sounds like my DH. Now that DD is here he see's how useful all this "extra" stuff has been.

  • We don't use a diaper pail. ?They gross me out. ?We either take the diapers outside to the trash can or, if it's at night, we put them in a plastic bag and take them out first thing in the morning. ?I personally don't think a few trips a day to the garbage can is a big deal, but ours is right outside in the garage so it's really not that far.

I wouldn't buy too many diapers right away, either. ?You won't know in advance which brand you'll like best. ?I like Pampers but my sister swears by Huggies. ?I think it depends on you child's body type and your own preferences. ?It's a good idea to buy some in advance, of course, but I wouldn't go crazy.?

  • I agree with pp, you should pick up a few bags, we had 2 of huggies and 2 of pampers so we could see what worked.  We also ended up needing preemie, which we just took 2 bags of from the hospital.  As for the diaper/garbage pail.. i would look on craigslist.  Or just get an extra garbage pail from another room and see if you really want a diaper gene/champ.  I love mine, taking it out once a week is much easier for me.

  • You can clean out the stash of diapers in your hospital room, if any are left!  We brought home a few that way.  We had an 8 lb 8oz baby and he was in the NB size for awhile.  I would guess you would be safe to buy some of those at least.  The argument for getting it ahead of time is you can get them somewhere cheaper than the grocery store.  :)

  • Load up on some preemie and NB diapers.  If you get Pampers Swaddlers and get way too many, I'll buy whatever you don't use.  lol   Payton was in preemie size for over a month and she was 7lbs 12oz.  She was in NB diapers for almost 3mo.  And you go through SO MANY diapers... when they're little, they like to be super dry and clean.  When they get older, they can wear diapers for quite a while without needing to be changed right away.
