Evergreen - Circumcision

Does anyone have any experience with how circumcisions are done at Evergreen? Is it in-patient or out-patient?

I'd much rather have it done while we are still in hospital rather than having to bring him back, but I'm not sure that is an option...

 Thanks!

Re: Evergreen - Circumcision

  • I honestly think it depends on the pediatrician. Check with them if nobody responds. I don't know personally. Good luck!

  • I delivered at Providence and my OB and ped do not do circs. So our ped sent us to Evergreen for it. DS was 3 wks and it went quickly and easily. The Dr who does them is experienced and laid back (DS barely cried, but I cried a lot anyway).  I know my situation is different than yours, but just thought I'd mention that if you have to do it after, Evergreen still has a great program for it.

  • my doc at evergreen says they do both...but like pp said, i'm sure it depends on the dr on call (only 2 out of the 4 docs in her office do circs).

she said it depends on your insurance, on which one is "better", because it's done by the same people, but more expensive in the hospital. so if your insurance covers it 100%, do it right away. if not, wait a few days and bring babyboy back to the office, and they'll do it there.

  • I had planned to have it done at Evergreen the day after birth, but he was down by 11% weight and they wanted him to focus on eating, so they delayed it. We ended up having it done at the midwife office a week later. I really wish I'd either not done it or done it at the hospital - the Dr's office was pretty traumatic - so much squirming and crying , ugh..it was not what I expected I guess.
  • I dont have any advice on how they are done at Evergreen, but I just wanted to throw a little circ advice out there!   If you have the option, go for the plastibell circ instead of the scalpel method!   My older son had the scalpel method and it was a ton of work and didnt heal properly, the twins had plastibell and it was SO easy and there is absolutely no foreskin remaining, unlike with the scalpel method which leaves some foreskin that needs to be pulled back to be cleaned and avoid adhesions.

  • I deliver at Providence Pavillion, so no help there. My ob does it the morning of being discharged, and uses the plastibell. We had no issues with either of the boys.

  • I delivered at Swedish, so not a direct help, but if you were doing out-patient, we had L's done by a circumcision specialist (and mohel) on Mercer Island. https://www.newbornmd.com/dr-aaron-witz/

Kinda weird, but we've had our Ped call their med students in to see how "perfectly" his was done.  I felt super comfortable with Dr Witz and he was awesome!

  • Thanks for all the info ladies!! Our insurance will cover it, I checked with them today ,so I'm going to see if I get lucky and they do it in the hospital..

Is Plastibell standard, or do you have to request it?

  • ps- We were planning on out-patient all along (because we went with Dr Witz, see above)  But I'd had a tough time nursing my first (a girl) and I really liked having a week or so to connect with and establish bf'ing with my son before he had the circ.

So as far as waiting after the hospital, I had a really good experience with it.  Just in case that is part of your decision.
