Finally met the OB

I know, it's really late in the game for that. I guess you have to schedule afternoon appointments to see the OB at the office I go to. If I had asked in the beginning, I would have seen him a lot sooner. I'm super happy though because he is really nice and laid back and is all for you doing whatever you're comfortable with. I'm very relieved and excited to deliver with him.

Also, I'm not high-risk but he is sending me to a high-risk doctor for an ultrasound? He didn't mention anything being wrong although I am small for being 30 weeks. They are sending me for estimated fetal weight, check fluid, biophysical profile, and serial growth. Does that seem normal? I'm a FTM so I'm not sure. He sounded more like he just really likes this doctor and if your insurance covers it, he sends you there instead of a general ultrasound place. (They don't do ultrasounds in the office)

Re: Finally met the OB

  • My doctor sent me to another OB for ultrasounds specifically because she wanted the "required" prenatal diagnostic tests, but did not have the equipment at her office to perform those tests.  Even though I go to the other OB for ultrasounds, he does not give any medical advice or provide any opinions, he just prints out pictures and tells me how cute my baby is.  Then he sends the sonograms and notes to my doctor who interprets everything and tells me what is going on.

Why your doc sends you to this OB and not another place may have to do with your insurance company.  My HMO is REALLY picky about who can do what...down to what labs are allowed to process bloodwork.  So I wouldn't worry too much.  If he thought you were high-risk, he'd tell you.

Just a quick question: who have you been seeing for prenatal care so far?  30 weeks seems pretty far along to just be meeting your OB.  Have you been seeing someone else so far?

  • my OB sent me to get my a/s at the hospital instead of just doing it in the office because I was sall for 20 weeks and I freaked out, though somehow didnt thin to ask why? panicked FTM here lol anyway, it turned out that one of his (now fired!) nurses forgot to give me a form to get a blood test done in the beginning so he just sent me to the more in depth u/s to be extra safe.

That was my long way of saying your dr sounds a lot like mine and is prob just playing it safe, and getting you the best care insurance will let you :) I wouldnt worry.

My OB has 2 offices but is the only OB, so he has PA's at both locations to do appointments if he isn't there. I had heard of people seeing the PA until they got to a certain point and then seeing the OB so I waited to see what would happen instead of asking. I finally asked at my last appointment and they scheduled me an appointment with him. I guess he's usually at the office I go to in the afternoons.

  • My OB sent me to a MFM for my 20w a/s and since he was having some kidney issues, I just continued to go to both and get u/s's only with my MFM. But at my regular OB appointment today, I was told I was going to get an ultrasound at my next appointment to just check up on him. If your OB doesn't seem worried about it, I'd just be excited to see my LO again.
