C-sections

Spinal question

When I had DD, the spinal made me shake so much that I couldn't hold DD on my own for a while, in part because I was shivering.  She was born at 8:15pm and all through the night I woke up scratching my face, feeling like there were bugs or a similar sensation.  They gave me Benadryl, but that didn't do much good.  At this point, we're planning a repeat c-section, and I'm wondering if there are different types of spinals so that I can request something different.

Re: Spinal question

  • You may have had duramorph in your spinal, which can make you itch like crazy.  You can always ask them not to put that in.  I hated the duramorph and am going to see if I can do a TAP block instead if I have to have another c-section.

  • yes, there are different narcotics and numbing medications that can be used if you reacted to them.

  • I didn't experience the shaking, but I did get the itching, it was awful!  They started with benadryl but it didn't help so they gave me a shot of something that did, I want to say it was something like nuvapro?
  • I had horrible itching but it was from the Morphine that they put in my IV after my spinal wore off. I get itchy with all narcotics. They gave me something in my IV that seemed to help a little bit.

  • get your records...but many of them cause you to shake.  If you get your records you can discuss it with the OB ahead of time so that they can give anesthsia a heads up.

I have had a terrible reaction both times to my spinals...mine is more severe head pain and breathing problems.  and they have to put me under general mid way through.  So I have been instructed to get my records of anesthsia for both sections to see what I am given so that I get something different.

The first section they thought it was referred pain from incision but the second time my dr. hadn't even cut yet and I was having problems....so it must have been something that was given to me.

There are different types of medicines given.

    DD (8/12/09), DD (2/8/11)

  • I'm not sure how exactly to answer your question, but my advice is to set up an appointment with your anaesthetist. I'm allergic to morphine, so my OB referred me to one so we could sit down and discuss my options.
  • I didn't have the itching, though they told me it could be a side effect, but I was shivering like crazy.  I felt like the OR was 40 degrees, and they had to give me a couple warm blankets to stop the shivering.  It lasted a couple hours after everything wore off too.  It's just a weird reaction you had.  Next time, make sure to talk to your anesthesiologist so he/she can give you the meds that will work for you.
