Circumcision/Insurance?

If you plan to get LO circumcised, how much do you have to pay out of pocket with your insurance?  I was looking at our plan yesterday and we will have to pay $150.00 per surgeon.  I have no idea how many surgeons it takes, anyone know?  I just wanted to see what other people are paying.  TIA!

Re: Circumcision/Insurance?

  • With our first son we had to pay $300. Only one Dr. did it.

  • I did not have to pay anything out of pocket to have DS circumcised.  I owed the hospital $600 after delivery - i'm not sure if that was included in the bill or not... but I doubt it.

  • My insurance (Tricare) covers circumcision as long as it is an in-house proceedure- meaning if it's done prior to me being discharged, it's covered.

If I wanted it later or done by a different facility it would be an out-of-pocket expense.

  • I am not sure what the cost will be, but my OB will do the procedure.

Everything for baby and me is 100% covered with our co-pay until we are released.

That's nice.  The baby is covered but non-medical surgical benefits do not fall under my maternity plan.

  • Nada. Tricare covers it completely as long as it is done before he leaves the hospital.

  • I just spent some time getting this exact issue ironed out with my insurance company. If my OB does the procedure, it is covered under my insurance policy. If the pediatrician does the procedure, it is covered under the baby's policy (which is retroactive from the time I sign the baby up back to his birth).

So to those that say it is not covered under maternity benefits, double check with your insurance company and see if it is covered under your baby's benefits after you add him to your insurance plan.

  • It only takes one dr.  The dr usually has a nurse or medical assistant there to help because he/she will be wearing sterile gloves.  The whole procedure takes about 10 minutes and can be done in office.  I've assisted with so many during my time as a pediatric medical assistant that I could probably do them on my own.

  • Ours is covered as long as it is done before discharged from the hospital.  Our pediatrician does it.

  • We had to do DS#2 in the doctor office last week (the neo in the hospital claimed ds was too small but we think it was because he didn't want to do one on a Sunday morning).   It cost us $49.  With DS #1, it was less than a $100 and done in the hospital.

  • We have BCBS federal and we have a copay of $150.

  • It takes one doctor. How much will be covered will depend on if we've met our deductible yet or not (we have a high deductible plan), but if we have, it will be covered.
